xAI Leader Reveals Secrets of Building the World's Largest Supercomputer in Memphis

Building the Future: Elon Musk’s Colossus Supercomputers in Memphis
Brent Mayo, the point man behind the construction of two of the world's most powerful supercomputers—Colossus 1 and Colossus 2—is making a significant impact right here in Memphis, Tennessee. As the leader of this ambitious project, Mayo is working at a rapid pace to bring these technological marvels to life.
At a recent meeting with the Memphis Rotary Club, Mayo shared insights into his experience working under Elon Musk. He described their interactions as informal and frequent, often occurring at unusual hours. “He wants to know answers to questions that are fundamentally looking to make the product better,” Mayo said during the event held at Rooster’s Blues House.
Mayo recently inspected the progress of xAI’s graywater plant, a system designed to recycle water for cooling the massive xAI computers located in a former Electrolux plant in Southwest Memphis. This initiative is part of xAI’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
In response to concerns from local residents, including those in Boxtown, Mayo assured them that xAI has adhered to all legal requirements regarding its energy and pollution-producing turbines. He emphasized that Musk’s vision extends beyond technology, rooted in a deep concern for the environment and public well-being.
Mayo highlighted Musk’s belief in solar energy, pointing to a proposed 522-acre solar farm near the site of Colossus 1 on Paul R. Lowry Road. The project, managed by CTC Property LLC, involves a 21-year lease with Memphis’ EDGE (Economic Development Growth Engine). This initiative aims to support the power needs of the supercomputers while promoting renewable energy.
While Mayo did not disclose details about xAI’s activities at a former power plant in Southaven, Mississippi, he confirmed that the company is exploring various possibilities. He also mentioned that the second Colossus supercomputer, currently under construction on Tulane Road, will require a significant number of Tesla megapacks—batteries capable of storing electricity.
Mayo explained that the Tesla megapacks on the Paul R. Lowry site are sufficient to prevent any negative impact on the Memphis Light, Gas and Water electric grid. “Our perspective is that we should never impact the grid negatively. What we do is isolate ourselves from the grid holistically, and then we use the Tesla megapacks.”
The company has a strong preference for hiring local talent, particularly Memphians and individuals from the Mid-South region. Mayo noted that the team of computer experts and engineers, mostly in their early 20s, enjoys benefits such as free lunch, free tools, and other comforts that reduce the need to leave work during shifts.
When asked about the possibility of developing small modular reactors (SMRs), Mayo acknowledged that it is a topic of discussion but stated that he has not been involved in any conversations related to this.
Mayo shared his personal journey, starting as a welder in the oil and gas industry in East Texas. His skills eventually led him to SpaceX, where he was part of the offshore recovery group for launches like Starship and Falcon 9. He joined xAI when the opportunity arose to help build the world’s largest supercomputer in Memphis.
Mayo expressed his enthusiasm for the project and the city itself. “People were telling us, ‘Hey, you can’t build this in West Tennessee,’ but this is Memphis, and we are using Memphians to build this. There’s no better story to tell somebody who has come and built something like this in Middle America.”
Beyond the technical aspects, xAI has taken steps to be a good neighbor. The company has removed approximately 600 discarded mattresses from roadsides and vacant lots in Boxtown and Southwest Memphis. They have also eliminated 100 tons of garbage and plan to improve ball fields at Fairly High School and J.P Freeman School. Additionally, xAI has partnered with Memphis-based Code Crew to explore scholarships for local students.
As xAI continues its mission to lead the AI revolution, the company is fostering a workforce that can drive innovation and ensure America’s continued leadership in the global tech landscape.
