Usyk: Russia Aims to 'Erase Our Existence'

A Symbol of Resilience and Hope

Oleksandr Usyk, the world heavyweight boxing champion, has taken a moment away from his professional ambitions to highlight the ongoing struggle of his homeland, Ukraine. During his week in London ahead of his fight with Daniel Dubois, Usyk participated in an event that underscored the importance of cultural preservation and national identity. He joined forces with Sir Richard Branson, British MPs, Ukrainian diplomats, and cultural figures to unveil a large mosaic known as the 'Kestrel' in Trafalgar Square.

The 'Kestrel' is a meticulously recreated version of a 1967 original that was severely damaged during the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The original mosaic, titled 'Boryviter' in Ukrainian, was created by artist Alla Horska in Mariupol. It symbolizes freedom and creativity, but its fate remains uncertain since the Russian occupation of the city.

Usyk expressed his gratitude to the British people for their unwavering support of Ukraine. He emphasized that Russia's actions are not just about military aggression but also about erasing Ukrainian culture and identity. "Russia is deliberately stealing Ukrainian culture and destroying what it cannot take – all in an attempt to erase our existence as a nation," he said.

Beyond the cultural aspect, Usyk highlighted the human cost of the conflict. Many Ukrainians have been displaced, living without a sense of home for years. He stressed the importance of rebuilding these lives, comparing the effort to piecing together a mosaic.

In addition to his upcoming fight, Usyk is focused on helping 64 Ukrainian families who lost their homes due to the war. His efforts are part of a broader campaign aimed at providing shelter and support to those affected by the conflict.

The 'Kestrel' mosaic has become a powerful symbol of hope and resilience. Its exact replica was first unveiled in Kyiv, with London being the first capital in the UK and Europe to host it on an international tour. The project received support from various organizations, including Ukraine WOW, ROZETKA, and the Alla Horska and Victor Zaretsky Foundation.

Sir Richard Branson praised the significance of the event, stating that Ukraine's fight is not just for its own future but for the ideals of freedom and democracy worldwide. He urged continued support for Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of standing together in the face of adversity.

The event also featured a visit to Waterloo Place, where a reimagined statue of Florence Nightingale was revealed. The statue features a prosthetic limb instead of her iconic lamp, symbolizing the resilience of Ukrainian defenders.

As part of the Ukraine: Defending Freedom campaign, the event highlighted the work of the Superhumans Center, which supports veterans and civilians overcoming physical injuries. Usyk's involvement in this initiative underscores his commitment to both his sport and his country.

Alongside the military aggression, the British government has noted Russia's systematic attempts to erase Ukrainian cultural and national identity. This includes forced deportations and the indoctrination of children, a strategy that dates back to Putin's illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Usyk's journey in the UK will conclude with a blockbuster rematch against Dubois, where he aims to secure the undisputed heavyweight title. However, his focus remains on the larger battle for Ukraine's survival and the preservation of its cultural heritage.
