Prince Harry and Meghan Trim Staff to Save Money: Inside Scoop

In a bid to manage their finances more efficiently, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly severed ties with their communications team. This decision follows a series of staff departures over the years since the couple stepped back as working members of the royal family in 2020.
According to sources, the number of employees who have either left or been let go by the couple has reached 25, with some exits not yet made public. The move comes amid financial considerations, particularly as their reported $100 million Netflix deal, which is believed to be closer to $20 million, is set for renewal this year.
One royal insider quipped, “It’s the same old story – they cycle through staff as quickly as normal people cycle through toilet paper. Milk lasts longer than their employees.” Despite producing popular content such as the "Harry & Meghan" docu-series and the show "With Love, Meghan," the couple's other documentaries have garnered less attention.
However, Netflix is shifting focus towards 'first look' deals rather than exclusive contracts, potentially leading to a renegotiation at a lower rate. This could pose challenges for Harry and Markle, who face significant expenses, including an estimated $2 million annual security bill and a $14.65 million home purchase in Montecito, CA, now valued at around $27 million. Their financial obligations also include property taxes, staff salaries, and personal office costs.
The couple has seen several key communications personnel leave, including Kyle Boulia, deputy press secretary, and Charlie Gipson, European communications director. Deesha Tank, Archewell’s director of communications, and Lianne Cashin, former head of operations at Archewell, have also departed, alongside unnamed social media and personal assistant roles.
Meredith Maines remains as chief communications officer, having joined after Ashley Hansen left to start her own consultancy firm. Emily Robinson, the only other in-house representative, previously worked on Netflix's royal drama "The Crown." Maines has enlisted support from Method Communications, explaining, “As the Duke and Duchess’s business and philanthropic interests grow, I have made the strategic decision to move toward a more traditional communications structure of specialist agency support.”
Industry experts note that employing a PR firm can be more cost-effective than maintaining full-time staff. However, reports suggest that working with the couple can be challenging. An unflattering Vanity Fair cover story described Markle as cold and withholding, while a Hollywood Reporter exposé claimed that “everyone’s terrified of Meghan,” citing her management style.
Sources close to the couple have criticized these portrayals, noting the difficulty in addressing anonymous claims. In response to negative coverage, Harry reportedly pushed for a US Weekly cover story featuring positive testimonials from former staffers.
Controversies surrounding Markle's treatment of employees date back to 2018 when Jason Knauf, then-communications secretary, filed a complaint alleging bullying. Leaked emails accused Markle of driving away personal assistants and undermining staff confidence. A Sussex representative dismissed the allegations as a smear campaign, and Markle's lawyer denied any wrongdoing.
Despite ongoing tensions, Harry has expressed a desire for reconciliation with his family, especially amidst health concerns affecting his father, King Charles. Recent reports indicate efforts within the palace to reunite Harry and Charles, potentially involving the couple and their children in future plans.
Meanwhile, Markle launched her rosé wine brand on what would have been Princess Diana’s 64th birthday, a gesture noted by fans and royal observers alike. On the entertainment front, industry insiders speculate that Markle's show could return for a third season, driven by public fascination despite mixed reactions.
As the couple navigates both personal and professional challenges, their journey continues to capture global attention, reflecting the complexities of life beyond royal duties.
