New RAV4 Goes Rugged, CX-5 Gets Luxe – Which Fits You?

A New Era for Compact SUVs

The compact SUV market is heating up as two of the most popular models in the segment, the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5, roll out new generations. These updates bring fresh design elements, advanced technology, and improved performance, setting a high standard for buyers looking to upgrade or enter the market.

Design: A Tale of Two Approaches

When it comes to exterior design, both the RAV4 and CX-5 take distinct paths. The new Mazda CX-5 embraces a more athletic, coupe-like silhouette with sweeping lines and a low stance, staying true to Mazda’s Kodo design language. This approach gives the CX-5 a sportier appearance, appealing to those who prioritize aesthetics and style.

In contrast, the sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 features sharper edges and a boxier shape, giving it a rugged, utilitarian look. Toyota also offers three visual themes for the RAV4: Core, Woodland, and GR Sport, allowing for greater personalization. The GR Sport variant, in particular, stands out with its 20-inch alloy wheels, while the CX-5's largest wheels are 19 inches, reflecting its focus on style over size.

The CX-5 has grown slightly compared to its predecessor, measuring 183.6 inches in length with an extended wheelbase of 109.3 inches. The RAV4, however, sees only minor changes in length, ranging from 180.9 to 181.8 inches depending on the variant. This means the CX-5 now has a slightly larger footprint than the RAV4, marking a shift from previous generations.

Interior: Tech and Practicality

Inside, both SUVs have embraced modern technology to cater to today's families. The RAV4 features a large touchscreen up to 12.9 inches, running Toyota's new Arene operating system. Meanwhile, the CX-5 takes a step further with a 15.6-inch touchscreen powered by Google, making it the largest infotainment display ever offered by Mazda in the West.

Both models are designed with practicality in mind, featuring five-seat configurations that suit young families. The CX-5 interior looks more premium, drawing inspiration from its larger siblings like the CX-70 and CX-90. The RAV4, on the other hand, seems more geared toward adventure, with a rugged and functional feel.

Although the CX-5 has increased dimensions, Mazda has not yet released cargo volume figures. However, the RAV4 offers a spacious 749 liters (26.5 cubic feet) of trunk capacity, which may give it an edge in terms of storage.

Powertrains: Hybrid Options on the Horizon

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 will come exclusively with electrified powertrains, including a hybrid and plug-in hybrid version. The RAV4 Hybrid delivers 226 hp with front-wheel drive or 236 hp with all-wheel drive, while the RAV4 Prime offers a powerful 320 hp. These models are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with electric motors.

Mazda’s initial offering for the CX-5 is a 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G four-cylinder engine producing 187 hp, with a six-speed automatic and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive. A hybrid variant based on Mazda’s new SkyActiv-Z engine is expected in 2027, promising improvements in both performance and efficiency.

Sales and Market Position

Both the RAV4 and CX-5 are top sellers for their respective brands, but the sales gap is significant. In 2024, the outgoing RAV4 was the world’s best-selling passenger vehicle, with 1,187,000 units sold globally. The CX-5, while still a strong performer, sold 345,209 units worldwide and 134,088 in the US.

With these new models, both vehicles are well-positioned to maintain their popularity, thanks to notable improvements in design, interior features, and performance.

Other Competitors in the Compact SUV Segment

The compact SUV market is highly competitive, with several other models vying for attention. These include the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Volkswagen Tiguan, Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Ford Escape.

For those seeking higher-end options, premium alternatives such as the BMW X1, Mini Countryman, Audi Q3, Volvo XC40, Mercedes GLB, and Cadillac XT4 offer more luxury and advanced features.

Pricing and Availability

As of now, neither Toyota nor Mazda has announced pricing for their new models. For reference, the 2025 CX-5 starts at $28,770, while the RAV4 begins at $29,550. It remains to be seen how pricing will change for the 2026 models.

Toyota’s new RAV4 is expected to arrive in US showrooms before the end of 2025, followed by the CX-5 in early 2026. The hybrid version of the CX-5 is set to debut later that year or in early 2027.
