I Tested This $7 "Miracle in a Can" on My Grungy Outdoor Sink—Now It’s Spotless!

It's officially summertime, and I love nothing more than entertaining, grilling, and cooking outside during the warmer months. We even added an outdoor kitchen and grilling space to our patio in our backyard for this very reason! And as much as my family and I look forward to being outdoors and hosting weekly BBQs, we don't love cleaning the grime off everything before the fun even starts.
From the patio chairs to the grill and the small outdoor kitchen sink, everything has to be cleaned thoroughly every year before any type of entertaining - especially at the start of summer, when a thick layer of pollen, dirt, dead leaves, and mildew sits atop everything outdoors. So I had to get to work!
My outdoor kitchen sink was probably in the worst shape it had been in a while. Somehow, the custom-sized piece of granite that fits over the sink to keep debris from entering had been removed, and for weeks the sink had collected tons of debris of all kinds - flower buds from the nearby Crepe Myrtle tree, small sticks, dust, and mildew were in the sink and even stained it. We use this sink often in the summertime for watering plants, washing hands, meal-prepping, outdoor cooking, and, unbeknownst to me, washing out paintbrushes after patching up a wall. Indeed, the sink was overdue for a thorough scrubbing.
How I Got My Outdoor Sink in Its Best-Ever Shape

I considered what cleaner would be best for the space. I knew bleach could damage the surface, so I wanted to avoid that; however, I needed a cleaner that would effectively remove those dark stains and mildewy spots. I needed to use something with some grit that would safely scrub the stainless sink. I remembered reading about how to clean a stainless steel sink using Bar Keepers Friend , and I knew I had some in my cleaning stash. Although my particular Bar Keepers Friend was specifically designed for stainless cookware , I figured it would work just as well on my stainless sink. Surely it would at the very least look better than it did.

Then I distributed a heavy dusting of the Bar Keepers Friend on the sink. I let it sit for a couple of minutes, then I grabbed one of my yellow sponges that I use on my kitchen sink, wet it a bit, and went to work scrubbing the sink from top to bottom.

I was surprised, to say the least! Just after a gentle scrub with a sponge, everything from rust stains to paint drips to mildew began loosening up in the sink. With just a few sprays of water, it turned into a thick paste that did the hard work for me. I spread it throughout the sink, scrubbed it slightly on some heavily stained areas, and then rinsed. After rinsing, I added a little more powder in the corners and on a few spots I had missed, scrubbed, then rinsed again. It was so easy, and the cleaner made quick work of the entire process.

I couldn't recommend this process and Bar Keepers Friend more highly for your next stainless steel cleaning session - no matter what it's on. This cleaner did the hard work for me, no elbow grease required, and I plan to use it again on every dirty stainless steel job in the future - especially if I'm outside in the summer heat. It worked quickly, and we're looking forward to enjoying the next backyard bash with a clean sink ready to go. It's no longer an embarrassing eyesore!
