CNN Crew Attacked by West Bank Settlers Amid Rising Violence

Attacks on Journalists and Civilians Highlight Escalating Violence in the West Bank
Violence in the West Bank has reached alarming levels, with reports of increasing attacks by Jewish extremists against both civilians and journalists. A CNN reporting team was recently attacked by settlers while covering a tragic incident involving a Palestinian-American man who was allegedly beaten to death near Ramallah. This event has raised serious concerns about the safety of journalists and the broader climate of impunity for such acts.
Reporters Attacked While Covering Tragic Death
On Sunday, a CNN crew was en route to the town of Sinjil, where 20-year-old Saif al-Din Kamil Abdul Karim Musalat was killed during a violent raid by settlers on Friday. As the team approached the location, they were followed by a white car carrying at least four masked settlers. The attackers initially attempted to pelt the reporters’ vehicle but fled when the crew approached a Border Police vehicle.
However, after the police left the area, the settlers ambushed the team again. One of them used a club or mallet to break the back window of the reporters’ car as they tried to escape. CNN reporter Jeremy Diamond shared photos of the damage on social media, stating that the team managed to flee unharmed.
Israeli police have confirmed that they are investigating the attack and are treating it “extremely seriously.” Despite this, the Foreign Press Association criticized authorities for not taking sufficient action against the violence, noting that similar incidents have occurred before, including an attack on German journalists in July.
Settlers Continue to Target Palestinians
The violence is not limited to the CNN crew. In the southern West Bank, a 65-year-old Palestinian man was reportedly beaten in his yard by six settlers. Mousa Nawaj’ah suffered injuries requiring hospitalization, including rib and back trauma and lacerations. Footage from the scene showed him being taken away on a stretcher, but no arrests were made.
In the village of Burqa, settlers torched several vehicles and a junkyard. Local residents reported that Israeli soldiers arrived at the scene but did not make any arrests. This pattern of violence, often carried out in broad daylight, has become increasingly common, with little to no accountability for the perpetrators.
Rising Tensions and Unchecked Violence
The situation has been exacerbated by ongoing anti-terror operations in the region, which have led to the displacement of thousands of Palestinians. Reports indicate that settlers have been actively trying to drive Bedouin shepherds off their land, further fueling tensions.
The United Nations has expressed concern over the escalating violence, noting that attacks against Palestinians are occurring in a climate of “impunity.” A UN spokesperson stated that Israeli settlers and security forces have intensified their actions against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
Recent Incidents and Military Operations
Separately, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that a terrorist attempted to ram IDF troops in Jericho. The troops responded with gunfire, neutralizing the individual, who was later arrested. No casualties were reported among the troops.
Since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, violence in the West Bank has surged. Over 950 Palestinians have been killed in the region, according to the Palestinian Authority health ministry. The IDF claims most of these individuals were involved in violent activities, though the exact details remain disputed.
Ongoing Concerns for Journalists and Civilian Safety
Rights groups continue to raise alarms about the rising number of attacks by settlers, which have become more frequent and brazen. The Foreign Press Association has condemned the lack of arrests and the targeting of journalists, calling for greater protection for those reporting on the conflict.
As the situation remains volatile, the international community is closely watching developments in the West Bank, with growing calls for accountability and action to address the cycle of violence.
