Why This DIY Fruit Punch is So Clever

If you're anything like me, you’ve watched countless apples get one bite taken out before being forgotten. Or you've stared at a container of berries going soft in the fridge, wondering if it's too late to rescue them.

Instead of tossing them in the trash (or guiltily pushing them to the back of the fridge), this fruit juice recipe gives those scraps a second, very sweet life. And your kids won’t care that their favorite drink started as leftovers.

This drink is more than just a juice alternative. It feels like something your grandmother might’ve made on a summer afternoon when you were a kid, served in a mason jar over clinking ice cubes. It’s wholesome and nostalgic in all the best ways.

There's no neon coloring, no refined sugar overload, just real fruit, a hint of sweetness and a whole lot of “Wow, this is so good!”

Best of all, you’re not following a complicated recipe and you don't need a juicer. It’s truly a “lazy mom” hack with no judgment and just a lot of good juice.

What Is Kompot?

In the comments, lots of folks were mentioning that Arabov's drink reminded them of kompot, a traditional non-alcoholic sweet drink made by simmering fresh or dried fruit in water with sugar. It's popular across Eastern Europe and parts of Central Asia and it is often served chilled in summer or warm in winter.

How to Make Magic Fruit Punch (aka Kompot)

There’s no measuring, no peeling, no prepping for this fruit juice. Just gather your odds and ends from the week, like apple peels, bruised peaches, squishy berries, half-bananas, orange slices, even grapes and toss them into a pot. As long as the fruit isn't moldy, it's fair game.

You can also gather fruit that's past its prime as you come across it, put it in a zip-top freezer bag and stash it in the freezer. Once you have enough, you can make a batch of this DIY fruit punch.

Fill the pot with enough water to cover the fruit. Add a spoonful of your choice of sweetener, such as honey, maple syrup or brown sugar. They all work beautifully, depending on the flavor profile you’re after.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes. Your kitchen will smell like a country fair or a berry patch, depending on the fruit, and your kids will start asking what you’re making before you even strain it.

Once it’s simmered down, strain out the solids. Pour the juice into a pitcher and chill it until you’re ready to serve. My favorite way is over ice, but you could also dilute it slightly with water or seltzer for a sparkling summer drink.

This magical juice is perfect with breakfast instead of store-bought orange juice, great as an after-school refresher and somehow feels just right next to dinner too because it's an elevated juice, not something made just for kids.

And because it’s made with real fruit and just a touch of natural sugar, you won’t feel like you’re giving your kids (or yourself) a sugar bomb.
