Terry Bradshaw Stumbles with Embarrassing Blunder at Prestigious Belmont Stakes in Saratoga

Pro Football Hall of Famer, four-time Super Bowl champion, and beloved NFL on FOX analyst Terry Bradshaw traded in his double-breasted suit and NFL analyst headset for saddles on Saturday.

After captivating his fans once again, this time during one of horse racing's biggest stages, Bradshaw's trademark humor shone through, whether intentionally or not.

Bradshaw was handed the ceremonial honor of shouting "Riders up!" before the 157th running of the Belmont Stakes , which ended in Sovereignty beating Journalism again in a Kentucky Derby rematch – marking his first-ever visit to Saratoga Springs in what many classified as an unexpected crossover between one of the NFL 's most beloved analysts and horse racing tradition.

But instead of recognizing the 157th edition, Bradshaw accidentally called the event the 137th in history.

The 137th edition of the race took place in 2005, and Afleet Alex won it. Bradshaw signaled to jockeys to mount their horses and prepare for the final jewel of the Triple Crown, but not before fans online completely roasted him for his mistake on national TV.

One fan on X sarcastically wrote, "Terry Bradshaw and Chris Fallica, noted horse racing experts, on Belmont coverage. A microcosm of everything wrong with Fox Sports ." The issue of Bradshaw's non-horse expertise was a common theme among horse racing enthusiasts who believed that the broadcast leaned more into suiting casual viewers over horse racing fans.

Another fan added, "I'm confused. Am I watching horse racing or football?” while another took a jab at the larger FOX broadcast strategy , and said, "Nobody turned it on at 6 p.m. Eastern to hear Terry Bradshaw tell stories from his playing days. Hire good horse racing people that don't normally work for your network."

"Ahhhh yes. Bring in Terry Bradshaw for Belmont," sarcastically wrote another fan, while gambling podcast BearBetsPod – whose co-host Chris Fallica was part of FOX's coverage of the Belmont Stakes – gave the Hall of Famer a shoutout after stopping by the network's studio before the race.

While many wondered why Bradshaw was on the call after all the blunders he made during his career, he expressed his love for horse racing before the event, specifically at Belmont. "I love great athletes. I love horses. I've been in the business for 50+ years," he said.

"I met all the great trainers before I ever had a horse. I love them, I love the speed, I love the heart. Everything about them."

Bradshaw further clarified his connection with D. Wayne Lukas, saying the duo once linked up at Preakness and sat down for a three-hour conversation. Lukas has won twenty Breeders' Cup races and received five Eclipse Awards, which are considered the "Academy Awards of horse racing," and was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2007.

The NFL icon said he is currently involved with Thoroughbred racehorse trainer Kenny McPete, who revived Bradshaw's interest in the sport. McPete won the 150th Kentucky Derby as the trainer of Mystik Dan.
