South Jersey Juneteenth Celebrations: Find Your Community Event

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

U.S. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, effectively ending slavery, but many slave owners didn’t heed the order. Enslaved people in Texas finally learned of their freedom when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, announcing on June 19, 1865 that the Civil War was over and that slavery was over in America.

Here are some ways that South Jersey communities are celebrating Juneteenth this year.

Preserving Black Haddonfield History Project’s Pre-Juneteenth Walking Tour

The Preserving Black Haddonfield History Project’s Pre-Juneteenth Walking Tour is set for June 13 from noon to 1 p.m.

This tour visits a dozen sites around the borough with historic significance of the Black experience in town, including baseball fields, churches, former segregated schools, residences, former businesses and more. It begins at Centennial Field (Lincoln Avenue and Park Place), and registration is required.

Two other events by members of this organization are to be held June 14 .

The first is a premiere screening of “Preserve: Narratives from Historic Haddonfield's African American Community Docuseries” at Kings Road Brewery from 4-5 p.m. The next is a community barbecue and Sadie Hawkins Dance Party from 6-8 p.m. at a location to be announced.

Lawnside Juneteenth 5K Run/Walk & 1 Mile Walk

June 14 is to feature the Lawnside Juneteenth 5K Walk/1 Mile Walk at 8 a.m. at the Wayne Bryant Community Center.Participants are encouraged to pre-register online.

The Underground Railroad Museum of Burlington County presents “Experience of a Lifetime: a Juneteenth Celebration”

Westampton's celebration is to take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 14 .

A 3.5-mile Trail of Freedom Walk is being offered at Rancocas State Park, located at 794 Rancocas-Mount Holly Road, at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The walk is to end at Timbuctoo.

At historic Timbuctoo, found at 130 Church St., members of the Timbuctoo Historical Society are to have exhibits in the cemetery, and are set to offer free genealogy consultations and raffle off three ancestry.com DNA kits. They're also to unveil a new interpretive sign in the cemetery to honor six of the community’s legacy families.

The day is to feature food, music, reenactments, vendors, storytellers, dancing, a gospel concert and more. People are asked to bring their own chairs.

Burlington Freedom Day 2025: A Ride to Freedom

Juneteenth celebrations are to take place June 14 (2-7:30 p.m.) and June 15 (2-7 p.m.) at the Riverfront Promenade in Burlington City.

The annual events, presented by members of the CHAI Community Development Corp., include vendors, food trucks, music, read-alouds, crafts, games and free lunch for children.

June 15 is also to feature “Praise on the Promenade." People are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets.

Camden Juneteenth Celebration

The City of Camden’s Juneteenth celebration is set for June 19 from 4:30-9 p.m. at Roosevelt Park. This event, which is to take place at 12-98 5th St., is to feature music, activities for the family and performances.

Mount Laurel Juneteenth event

The Mount Laurel celebration is scheduled for June 19 at Laurel Acres Park from 4-7 p.m. It's to feature businesses and vendors, live music, breweries, food trucks and historical information.

This event is set to take place at 1045 South Church Road.

Moorestown Juneteenth Freedom Day

Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown is to host its sixth-annual event from 4-7 p.m. June 21. There's to be music, games, dance, art and food trucks.

Vineland Juneteenth ceremony

A ceremony at 640 E. Wood St. is to begin at 5 p.m. on the steps of City Hall on June 19 at noon. This event is to move inside to city council chambers if it's raining.

Evesham Township annual Juneteenth Celebration

Savich Field in Marlton is to host the fourth annual Juneteenth event June 20 from 5-8 p.m. at 510 E. Main St.Vendors, music, games, performances and other attractions are to be featured.

Willingboro Juneteenth celebration

This year’s celebration, “A Journey Through Freedom”, is to be held June 21 from noon to 4 p.m. at Millcreek Park.There's to be dance, vendors, spoken word and other special performances.

Gloucester Township Juneteenth celebration

The township is to hold its annual Juneteenth celebration June 21 at Veterans Park from 1-4 p.m. This celebration is to feature live music, art, youth activities food, entertainment, a cultural marketplace and more

Cherry Hill Juneteenth Parade and Festival

Croft Farm is the site of this annual Juneteenth celebration June 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There's to be a parade, live entertainment, food trucks, local vendors, children’s games, pony rides, petting zoo and face painting.

The Amazin’ Grace and GLB are among the scheduled performers.

This event is hosted by members of the Cherry Hill African American Civic Association in partnership with Cherry Hill Township officials and members of the Cherry Hill Police Department.

Voorhees Juneteenth celebration

The Freedom Day Celebration, sponsored by members of the Voorhees Cultural & Diversity Committee, is to be June 21 from 1-4 p.m. at Connolly Park. It's to include performances, music, arts and crafts, food trucks and more.

This event is set to take place at 605 Centennial Blvd.

Collingswood Juneteenth

The Unity in the Community Day is to be June 22 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event “aims to honor the rich cultural heritage of the Black diaspora, promote unity, and educate the community about the significance of the holiday.”

Glassboro's 6th annual Juneteenth Festival

This celebration is to take place at the Glassboro Sports Complex June 28 from 2-8 p.m. There's to be live music, vendors, food trucks and youth activities.
