WWE SMACKDOWN RESULTS AND LIVE BLOG FOR JUNE 27
A cheerful figure full of sadness, driven by inner lies, the holy light blinds those who see. Disbelievers cursed to eternity, but me? I’m just here to liveblog this pro wrestling show for you, folks.
The show opens with the usual montage of talent arriving at the arena.
“American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes makes his entrance and gets on the mic.
Before he can say anything, Randy Orton makes his entrance.
Orton gets on the mic and asks the crowd if they saw Cody wrestle Jey Uso in the semifinals and says if they’re not in the running for match of the year come Slammy time, something’s wrong. It was a hell of a match and a pleasure to watch, but the reason he’s out here is because under any other circumstances he’d love to see that crown on Cody’s head, but right now, he NEEDS this crown.
Not just because if he wins the crown he gets a chance at number fifteen, but because it stands for redemption. Redemption because he made it to the finals last year here and he fell short to GUNTHER. Honestly this is hard to follow because they had technical issues taping it so there’s no hard cam or the normal A/B angles, it’s all low-angle handheld footage that jerks around constantly.
Anyway, Cody asks Randy if John Cena really embarrassed him, with their 30 world titles between them. He remembers everything, his very first night in this company, Randy slapping his dad across the face, he remembers the bad and he remembers the good, a few months ago a student hearing everything he could possibly want to hear from his teacher.
He knows Randy thinks he needs to win this, but be it John Cena or CM Punk coming out of this, Cody needs it just a little bit more. When it’s all said and done, RKO will still be the three most dangerous letters in WWE, but Randy won’t be King of the Ring, because Cody will.
Solo Sikoa is backstage with JC Mateo in a wind tunnel.
He tells JC they’re gonna give Jacob Fatu once chance to come back into the fold, remind him of what it’s like to not have any backup. Tonight JC is gonna take care of Jim Uso, and tomorrow night he’s gonna take care of Jacob.
Jim Uso makes his entrance to send us to break.
“Big” Jim Uso vs. JC Mateo
Mateo stampedes him into the corner, shoulder blocks, Uso turns him around, chops in the corner but JC freight trains him! Picking him up in the corner, Jim cuts him off with an uppercut and passes him to the floor, leg-feed enzuigiri, off the ropes but Solo Sikoa runs interference to stop the dive and we go to break!
Back from commercial, Mateo in control, big slam, standing moonsault, cover for two! Big Jim comes back with a Whisper in the Wind, both men are down and out! Uso with right hands, superkick, big uppercut, fireman’s carry but JC slips out! Enzuigiri staggers Mateo, to the floor, suicide dive follows!
Back inside, back and forth...
JC Mateo wins by pinfall with Tour of the Islands.
Post-match, Solo gives Jim a chance to reconcile but Uso slaps him across the face! JC and Sikoa circle... “SAMOAN WEREWOLF” JACOB FATU MAKES THE SAVE! Solo runs away and Fatu hits the moonsault on Mateo! Jacob and Jim have a standoff, Uso shoves him out of the way because Sikoa was going to attack, and he lays Solo out with a superkick!
Jacob and Jim stand tall together in the ring, but they’re not shaking hands or anything.
Backstage, the tag team division is getting lectured by #DIY, who claim that they’re trying to motivate them to come together against the Wyatt 6. Nick Aldis appears and they ask him why the Wyatts are getting a tag title match and beg him to do something about it.
He says he’s gonna do something about it and brings Andrade el Idolo over, telling him to find a tag partner because he’s got a match against #DIY.
Giulia gets a video promo where she says the WWE Women’s United States Championship is just a stepping stone and she’s gonna prove the title doesn’t belong to Zelina Vega.
Zelina gets an equal and opposite promo where she says that Giulia will have to pry the title from her cold dead body.
Vega makes her entrance dressed as a snake for some reason and we go to break.
Giulia vs. Zelina Vega (c) (WWE Women’s United States Championship)
Vega with a leg pick, a little back and forth, Giulia up top, Zelina cuts her off and knocks he to the floor with a knee and follows it with an Orihara moonsault to send us to break!
Back from commercial, Vega blasts Giulia with double knees against the steel steps, back inside, taking it to her, knees in the corner, perching on the second, Meteora... NOPE! BAck and forth, front kick from Zelina sets up the Code Red but the Beautiful Madness gets a foot on the ropes! Giulia presses the attack...
Giulia wins by pinfall with the northern lights bomb, becoming your new WWE Women’s United States Champion.
Backstage, Charlotte Flair runs into Alexa Bliss.
Flair says she doesn’t wanna talk about it, Bliss says she needed help. Charlotte doesn’t want friends, and Alexa says they don’t need to be friends to help each other out, they can be allies of convenience.
And so we go to break.
Back from commercial, Wade Barrett is in the ring to preside over a Queen of the Ring face-to-face.
He introduces first Jade Cargill and then Asuka.
Jade Cargill says she’s not just gonna take the title at SummerSlam, she’s gonna take the whole damn throne.
Asuka dances in response before getting on the mic and admitting that Jade is strong, but power isn’t everything. Asuka has skills and experience, and she’s Asuka.
Enter Naomi.
She says the Money in the Bank briefcase means the two of them can fight over the crown, but she has all the power and she can do whatever she wants. She says Jade hates that no matter what she does, Naomi has the power to take it all away. Cargill attacks Naomi, Asuka attacks Jade and lays her out for ignoring her!
Adam Pearce and Nick Aldis are backstage talking about what to do with the women’s tag titles when Aleister Black rolls up.
Before he can say much, Ron Killings busts in and yells that he’s driving now and he wants John Cena right now. Pearce tells him to calm down, he says he is calm, and Nick explains that John is here for CM Punk tonight, not for R-Truth. Truth says he’s gonna take care of it and Al Black walks out after him to send us to break.
Back from commercial, Andrade el Idolo’s tag team partner is... REY FENIX!
#DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa) vs. Andrade el Idolo & Rey Fenix
El Idolo and Ciampa to start, waistlock, Tom blasts him with a back elbow, right hands, tag to Fenix, double whip, rolling solebutt, front kick, drop toeholds set both of ‘em up and they get sandwiched between a dropkick and an enzuigiri on the apron! Babyfaces up top, stereo planchas take DIY out and we go to break!
Back from commercial, Fenix is in the corner, sends Gargano on the floor, kick combo on Ciampa and the path is clear for a tag! Johnny pulls Andrade off the apron, Tom with a knee, cover for two! Ciampa sets him up top, climbs to join him, Rey knocks him down... GOODBYE AMIGO! Hot tag to el Idolo, in like a house afire taking everybody out!
Corner knees come up empty, Superman Spear countered into a headlock elbow drop and Andrade follows it up with a tornado DDT for two! Elbow and a kick in the corner, off the top, moonsault, roll through but DIY hit Shatter Machine for two and we go to break!
Back from commercial, Gargano headed up top, Andrade climbs to join him, moonsault works the first time... CIAMPA BREAKS IT UP! Fenix runs in and then dives on Tom with a tope con giro! Trading strikes, Gargano floats over a suplex, into the corner, Fenix with the blind tag, backflip up and over right into a German suplex... NO GOOD!
He’s got John up for the Muscle Buster, Andrade up top, Ciampa shoves him down, Gargano reverses to a small package... SO CLOSE! Poison Frankensteiner, tag to Tom, super-kick assisted Fairytale Ending... STILL NO! Powerbomb lift... PROJECT CIAMPA CONNECTS BUT ANDRADE BREAKS IT UP! The match breaks down, a little bit of “everybody do something cool”, kneepad down but Ciampa just knees the turnbuckle!
Tag made, Muscle Buster position, Mexican Muscle Buster connects, he throws Ciampa to Andrade...
Andrade el Idolo & Rey Fenix win by pinfall with the Message from Andrade on Tommaso Ciampa.
And so we go to break.
Back from commercial, we get a recap of John Cena’s appearance on Stephen Colbert last week.
The “yin and yang” John Cena vs. CM Punk video package follows.
Ron Killings makes his way into the ring and asks Saudi Arabia what’s up before telling them that he is Ron Killings, the Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth. He’s not letting John Cena ride or slide, and he wants him out here right now.
Aleister Black appears behind him and takes his head off with Black Mass!
He sits down and tells Ron he told him not to drink from this cup and he figures they’re even now.
Street Profits are interviewed backstage.
They remind us it was four years between title reigns so the Wyatts must be out of their damn minds if they think they’re losing the tag titles any time soon. It’s Friday, so they’re going to work.
B-FAB rolls up to tell them she has their back if they need her, and they make their entrance to send us to break.
Back from commercial, Aleister Black runs into Damian Priest.
Priest asks if he’s feeling real tough right now and Black says he’s not. Damian says he knows Truth and what he’s capable of, and next time he should step to him face to face and the results will be very different.
Al shoves past him and Carmelo Hayes rolls up.
Melo says if Priest really is Truth’s boy he’ll stay out of his way before he catches strays. Damian tells him he should walk away now and Hayes does, saying the truth hurts.
Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) (c) vs. Wyatt 6 (Dexter Lumis & Joe Gacy) (WWE Tag Team Championship)
Lumis and Ford to start, Dexter on all fours, Montez gets down with him and they throw hands as the bell rings! Whip across, big dropkick from Ford, tag to Gacy, Dexter with a spinebuster and a cover because he just forgot I guess, #DIY and Motor City Machine Guns come to ringside and we go to break!
Back from commercial, Ford off the ropes and he runs right into a pop-up haymaker from Lumis! Both men go for lariats, Montez fired up, both men collide in the middle of the ring! Dawkins and Gacy legal, Angelo lights him up in the corner but Joe blocks Drill Bit with a headbutt and tags Dexter back in! Los Garza trip Lumis up and pull him out of the ring but referee Danilo Anfibio doesn’t see!
Dawkins pounces Lumis into Los Garza, #DIY attack Angelo and Anfibio calls for it...
Street Profits win by disqualification.
Post-match, a wild brawl breaks out among the tag teams! Erick Rowan comes in and cleans house, taking Los Garza out with one big crossbody, but Motor City Machine Guns and Fraxiom work together to take him out with Superkick Parties and dives! Axiom explodes out of the corner but Uncle Howdy slides in the ring and hits Sister Abigail!
Street Profits clear Howdy out, Dawkins off the ropes... BIG MAN TOPE CON GIRO! FORD WITH THE OVER THE POST TOPE CON GIRO!
Commentary hypes up the merciful return of SmackDown to two hours starting next week.
We get a recap of JC Mateo vs. “Big” Jim Uso and the aftermath thereof.
Jacob Fatu runs into Jim Uso in the parking lot.
They talk about how they don’t need each other’s help but they don’t have a problem with each other. Jim tells him he gives respect where it’s earned and what Jacob Fatu is doing stepping up to Solo Sikoa is something he should have done long, long ago. Fatu tells him it’s all good as long as he gets in where he fits in, yadimean?
Nia Jax makes her entrance to send us to break.
Nia Jax vs. Tiffany Stratton (c) (WWE Women’s Championship Last Woman Standing Match)
