DIY Pine Needle Sugar Scrub: Naturally Exfoliating Bliss
There’s nothing quite like stepping into the woods and taking a deep breath of crisp pine air. This DIY Pine Needle Sugar Scrub brings that same invigorating, grounding feeling right to your skin, gently exfoliating while delivering the therapeutic benefits of pine.
It’s simple to make, packed with skin-loving ingredients, and smells like a winter forest in a jar.
I LOVE the smell of pine needles. It reminds me of Oregon rain and Christmas time. I use sugar scrubs all the time, so I wanted to have this one during the winter months for a relaxing and calming smell for me.
It turned out SO good I had to share the recipe with you! Here is how to make a homemade pine needle sugar scrub for yourself or to give as gifts.

Why Pine Needles?
Pine has long been used in traditional herbal medicine for both its aromatic and therapeutic properties.
When added to a sugar scrub, it not only smells incredible but also supports the skin and senses in a few meaningful ways:
- Anti-inflammatory & Antimicrobial Properties : Pine essential oil contains compounds like alpha-pinene and limonene, which have been shown to support skin health through their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. This makes it a great addition to scrubs that are used on areas prone to irritation or breakouts.
- Energizing & Clarifying Aroma : The bright, resinous scent of pine helps clear mental fog and reduce fatigue. Inhaling it while using your scrub in the shower can feel like a reset for your body and mind.
- Physical Exfoliation from Pine Needles : Finely ground pine needles add a unique texture that complements the sugar, helping to exfoliate while offering the added benefit of naturally occurring compounds like vitamin C and flavonoids.

DIY Pine Needle Sugar Scrub Recipe
I made a big batch of this, so this recipe makes around 14 ounces. You can easily half it to make less for yourself, but it is a great DIY Christmas gift !
Here is the pine needle sugar scrub recipe:
Ingredients
- ¼ cup carrier oil (I used a pine needle infused oil )
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon pine needles
- 20 drops pine essential oil

Instructions
In a small bowl, add your pine essential oil to the carrier oil and stir.

Pour the oil mixture into your sugar and stir well until fully combined.
Finely chop or blend your pine needles into small pieces. Fold them into the scrub until evenly distributed.

Scoop into a glass jar with a lid and store in a cool, dry place.

Notes
- Carrier Oils : Choose a lightweight oil for an easier rinse-off. Avocado, sweet almond, or even grapeseed oil work beautifully.
- Boost the Pine : For a more intense pine aroma and deeper skin benefits, infuse your carrier oil with pine needles for a few weeks before using. Learn how to do this here.
- Shelf Life : As long as water doesn’t get in, this scrub should last a few months. Always use clean, dry hands or a spoon when scooping it out.
