10 Affordable Used EVs That Won't Break the Bank
New and used car buyers consider price as the starting point in their purchase planning, before looking at their wants—more power, better efficiency, room for people and cargo, on-board comfort and technology, and so on. Most EV buyers, and especially those entering the market for the first time, also consider driving range and ability to charge equally important starting points.
Due to the pace of technological development, today’s new EVs are costly, especially those with high driving ranges , which means many buyers are turning to used EVs (whose values depreciate quickly), even if that means old technology. Luckily, there are used EVs with average ranges (we consider upwards of 200 miles acceptable for most needs) priced around $20,000.

2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro
Average Used Value: $21,536
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 was Volkswagen’s first global mass-market EV , built on the dedicated MEB platform that would spread throughout the VW Group, and launched the company’s drive toward widespread electrification. Positioned as a compact crossover, it dived into the most desirable segment in the industry, furthering VW's legacy of accessible, practical vehicles.

EPA Estimated Range: 260 Miles
The RWD 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro uses a rear-mounted electric motor powered by an 82-kWh battery pack to deliver in excess of 250 miles of driving before having to recharge. A standard 11-kW onboard charger for Level 2 home charging will restore battery power in 7.5 hours, but on the road, charging to 80 percent capacity takes about 35 minutes, depending on the battery level.
2022 Audi Q4 e-tron 40 Premium
Average Used Value: $20,181
Although Audi started its move to EVs with the full-sized Audi e-tron SUV (later Q8 e-tron) of 2019, the 2022 Audi Q4 e-tron was its in earnest commitment to electrification, diving into the highly desirable compact luxury SUV segment. As with other Volkswagen Group EVs, the Q4 e-tron used VW’s MEB platform. Slow to sell when new, the Q4 e-tron’s goodness is drawing attention in the used market.

A rear-mounted electric motor makes up the base powertrain and drivetrain of the 2022 Audi Q4 e-tron, endowing it with sufficient power to move people and cargo, but buyers may choose to move up to the dual-motor Quattro version. Its 82-kWh battery offers an EPA-estimated competitive range of 241 miles , with charging times of about nine hours at home and about 35 minutes on the road.
2022 Kia Niro EV EX
Average Used Value: $19,805
The Kia Niro stands as a practical entry point into the world of electrification, with three levels of electric propulsion, culminating in the fully-electric Niro EV. All of them compete in the desirably compact SUV segment, though the Niro may not get consideration due to its front-wheel drivetrain. Still, that gives it the efficiency edge over most of its competitors.

EPA Estimated Range: 239 Miles
With a larger battery, the 2022 Kia Niro EV EX would have a longer range, but its 64-kWh unit offers up a healthy ratio of power to weight, providing efficient motoring, and taking charging times into consideration. The Niro EV achieves a full charge at home in about 9.5 hours, but the car’s 50-kW Direct Current charging speed needs over an hour to “fast charge” to 80 percent capacity.
2019 Jaguar I-Pace EV400 SE
Average Used Value: $19,802
The 2019 Jaguar I-Pace marked the start of Jaguar's transition to electric vehicles, which the company is ramping up in 2025. As Jaguar's first all-electric model, the I-Pace combined the elegance of a luxury SUV with Jaguar’s penchant for sporty performance and the efficiency of electric propulsion. Its striking design and advanced technology garnered significant attention.

Like the new version, the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace EV400 SE uses two electric motors to deliver impressive acceleration and handling, as well as the all-wheel drive befitting an SUV. The sprint from 0-60 mph takes about 4.5 seconds, and the 90-kWh lithium-ion battery offers average range with the ability to acquire 80 percent capacity in about 40 minutes at a roadside charger. Buyers will be better served by making sure the Kona Electric is charged up and ready for the day after about 9.5 hours of home charging, as charging up on the road takes about an hour to acquire an 80 percent charge.
2023 Nissan Leaf SV
Average Used Value: $18,916
The Nissan Leaf brought viable electric propulsion to the mainstream in a usable hatchback package, as most EVs at the time were either glorified golf-carts (and many looked it) or aftermarket conversions of established models. The Leaf is no longer the benchmark for EVs, either in space utilization or electric practicality, but it continues to offer a suitable choice for around-town errand-running.

EPA Estimated Range: 226 Miles
The 2023 Nissan Leaf SV continues the Leaf legacy as an affordable option in the EV market. Its 62-kWh battery delivers usable around-town range, though it will struggle to become a practical road-trip vehicle. Acquiring a full charge overnight will require about 11 hours, but its fast charging capability requires about an hour to replenish roughly 180 miles of range.
2017 Tesla Model 3 Long Range
Average Used Value: $18,801
After the Tesla Model S showed that EVs weren’t strictly low-range, underpowered vehicles, the Tesla Model 3 showed they could also be affordable. Then, as now, the Model 3 was one of the more popular models (electric or otherwise) due to its compact size and outstanding performance. As such, it also manages to downplay EV's main drawbacks—rapid depreciation .

EPA Estimated Range: 310 Miles
Even with its standard battery, the 2017 Tesla Model 3 manages range equal to many of the other vehicles on this list, but the Long Range, 75-kWh battery version puts it head and shoulders above all the others. As with other Teslas, it is time-consuming to charge at home, requiring about 12 hours, but on the road, a Tesla Supercharger will add about 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes.
2023 Chevrolet Bolt 1LT
Average Used Value: $18,610
The Chevrolet Bolt was the follow-up to the ground-breaking Volt sedan, and it was a good one, becoming one of the most affordable EVs at the time, and using the popular tall, compact crossover bodyshell to garner interest. It’s peppy, sized right, and practical for urban environments, though its versatility isn’t as good as more modern compact crossovers.

EPA Estimated Range: 259 Miles
As with its main competitor at the time, the Nissan Versa, the entry-level 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV 1LT can basically sustain itself on overnight charging, which takes about seven hours, but will be a nail-biter out on the highway, where DC roadside fast-charging will add just 100 miles of travel for every 30 minutes of charging (due to its ancient charging rate).
2020 BMW i3s REx
Average Used Value: $18,485
More so than some of its city-car counterparts on this list, the stylish BMW i3 is not a road-trip car. But as an elegant status symbol for around-town cruising and errand-running, the i3s is one of the better choices, with its solid BMW dynamic manners and quiet performance. Its carbon-fiber shell houses an interior that is comfortable for four in high-seats, but versatility for cargo is not a top-selling point.

EPA Estimated Range: 200 Miles
The base 2020 BMW i3 is strictly a city vehicle, storing just enough juice in its 42-kWh battery to travel just 153 miles. That led to the addition of a 600-cc two-cylinder engine/generator (which does not power the drive wheels directly) in the BMW i3s REx Range Extender model, offering a more attractive range of up to about 200 miles, while retaining charging times of seven hours overnight, and 20 minutes at a roadside station.
2020 Kia Soul Electric
Average Used Value: $17,945
The Kia Soul ignited public interest in Kia, mostly with its innovative marketing, since the vehicle itself is just a unique-looking sub-compact hatchback. That having been said, that’s perfectly good, seeing as cars like the Honda Civic and Hyundai Excel gained relevance in mainstream America. It has the advantage of versatility in a cabin that effectively handles people and their stuff with ease and comfort.

EPA Estimated Range: 249 Miles
The underrated 2020 Kia Soul EV took a huge forward stride in securing a 64-kWh battery that took range up to average (the previous Soul barely got 110 miles out of its 30-kWh battery), and it also acquired fast-charging capabilities. The refreshed electric 2020 Soul takes about 9.5 hours to completely top up the battery, or you can “fast charge” it to 80 percent capacity in just under an hour.
