Vermonters Gear Up for the 55th Annual Green Up Day: A Season of Cleaning Up and Community

Vermont residents are preparing to participate in the state’s yearly Green Up Day this coming Saturday.
Each year, various organizations throughout the state join forces to collect litter from our roadways, parks, and rivers.
Green Up Day has been a cherished Vermont tradition for many years, and this year celebrates its 55th anniversary.
Since 1970, volunteers have combed through all areas of Vermont to collect trash as part of their commitment to maintaining the state’s beauty and supporting environmental conservation efforts.
Last year, over 30,000 individuals participated, gathering more than 400 tons of garbage. This represents a 30% rise from 2023.
Organizers aim for an additional 30% growth this year compared to last year's achievements.
Additionally, there’s an application that enables you to monitor your path, assemble a group, indicate locations where you’ve dropped off items for collection, and challenge other participants.
Kate Alberghini, who serves as the executive director of Green Up Vermont, mentions that reaching out extensively plays a significant role in their expansion.
She emphasized that it’s more than just the day dedicated to collecting trash, which holds significant value, but also the sense of accomplishment we share as a community afterward. This shared experience fosters unity among residents and strengthens ties through collaboration and care for the environment where we reside.
Volunteers have the option to collect authorized Green Up bags from municipal buildings in their towns and establishments that are taking part in the initiative.
