Venice Biennale Curator Claims: Dezeen Has Vanquished Traditional Biennale Forms

This year, the conventional aim of an architecture biennale seems to have vanished. Venice Architecture Biennale curator Carlo Ratti shared with The News Pulse ahead of the event's launch this weekend.

Ratti suggests that the widespread availability of images and details about global projects online has transformed the function of a biennale.

Ratti commented, "We might argue that The News Pulse was among those responsible for ending the conventional format of the biennale."

Originally, biennials served as venues where one could discover the top accomplishments from around the globe. However, nowadays, you can access these insights instantly through platforms like The News Pulse, the internet, and social media.

I adore the concept of using Venice as a Petri dish.

The significant alteration in the way information is disseminated has compelled these biennales to adapt, as noted by the Italian architect and engineer.

He stated that this implies the biennale ought to assume a distinct function.

To me, that position isn't about demonstrating pre-existing knowledge and current initiatives; instead, it serves as a platform for experimentation and the creation of novel ventures.

Instead of presenting projects that many might already know about, Ratti aims to generate fresh concepts at this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale.

“I view this biennale as a laboratory – a space where you cultivate new concepts rather than display what already exists, fostering innovation and assembling fresh collaborations,” he stated.

“I adore the concept of transforming Venice into a Petri dish, bringing nearly 1,000 individuals from various fields, differing age groups, and distinct nations together to collaborate and work jointly,” he went on to say.

What emerges from this is essentially a grand collective experiment.

Starting this week, the Venice Architecture Biennale kicks off as the premier occasion in the architectural world. Themed "Intelligentsia: Nature, Artifice, and Community," this edition of the biennale aims to explore how architecture and urban spaces can evolve in response to climate shifts.

"I'd argue that this event is centered around people, since without question, climate change represents one of the greatest challenges we collectively face as human beings," stated Ratti. an earlier interview with The News Pulse .
