Trump Directs DHS to Deploy 20,000 Additional Officers for Immigration Enforcement
President Trump instructed the Department of Homeland Security to recruit an additional 20,000 agents for their deportation taskforce. This directive also involves utilizing personnel from state and local levels. It was included as part of a presidential statement released on Friday aimed at encouraging undocumented immigrants to depart the U.S. voluntarily. New York Times Reports indicate that Trump did not specify how this significant increase in immigration enforcement funding would be financed.
The department plans to start "appointing and hiring state and local police officers, previous federal agents, staff from different federal departments, as well as others," according to the clause. ICE, an agency under DHS, employs over 21,000 people, it adds. BBC The ICE website states that included are 6,100 deportation officers along with over 750 enforcement removal assistants. White House website states that the 20,000 additional personnel will be used for an "intensive, forceful wave of deportations."
