Tornado Tears Through Grinnell, Kansas: Homes Damaged and I-70 Shut Down Due to Power Outages

On Sunday evening, a tornado caused damage in parts of Grinnell, Kansas.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has shut down portions of I-70 in northwest Kansas because fallen power lines are obstructing the travel lanes close to Grinnell.

The closures affect eastbound lanes from Exit 54 near Colby to Exit 85 in Grinnell, as well as westbound lanes from Exit 159 close to Hays down to Exit 85 in Grinnell.

Images supplied to NWKS Radio reveal a devastated church and houses ruined by the tornado.

Tonight, our thoughts are with the people of the Grinnell community after the tornado hit," stated U.S. Senator Roger Marshall. "Please ensure your safety, steer clear of the region, and diligently adhere to instructions provided by local officials as dangerous weather systems keep passing through our state.

I'm worried about the communities in west Kansas affected by the tornadoes and am collaborating with local authorities to evaluate the destruction and identify the urgent requirements at hand," stated U.S. Senator Jerry Moran. "Kansans, be vigilant! Dangerous meteorological situations statewide have led to tornadoes in Gove County and Scott County, with many areas still anticipating additional storms and possible twisters.

Midwest Energy, Inc., said 15 poles were damaged.

No current reports of any casualties or fatalities have been shared.
