Texas Author Chronicles Vietnam: Intimate Interviews with War Veterans Reveals Untold Stories

(NEXSTAR) - Even though tales of Vietnam War veterans can be found within museum walls, memorials, and individual narratives, an artist from Texas, specializing in history, is transforming his admiration for those who served into vivid non-fiction literature.
Doyle Glass The author has penned numerous bestsellers focused on Vietnam War veterans, earning the 2023 PenCraft Book of the Year Award for Best Nonfiction with "Swift Sword: The True Story of the Marines of Mike 3/5 in Vietnam, 4 September 1967." Recently, Doyle sat down with Marielena Balouris from Nexstar to discuss the extent of his research process and the insights gained through this work.
He mentioned that he discovered there isn't much "documented" regarding the experiences of Vietnam veterans. Therefore, Glass embarked on locating these veterans for interviews.
"I recall having a landline and a cassette tape recorder, and I used to record the interviews," states Glass. He mentions that this method, which included transcribing the recordings, spanned five to six years.
Glass mentions that despite authoring these works, it is the veterans who share their stories. One of these veterans is Steve Lovejoy, a Marine Corps member who served in Vietnam between 1967 and 1968. Lovejoy participated alongside Glass and Balouris to talk about his experiences combatting in Vietnam as well as working with Glass to narrate his own tale.
I felt truly privileged when someone believed I had valuable insights to share—so that was really special," states Lovejoy, reflecting on his first meeting with Glass. "To be among those who witnessed it firsthand... now we have the chance to clarify the facts.
For his part, Glass says that he believes a nonfiction format is the best avenue for telling these kinds of personal stories, as opposed to novels.
Glass went on, "I've consistently held the view that nonfiction often turns out to be more dramatic and revealing compared to fiction."
