Study Reveals Increased Risk: Children of Parents with Schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder

A recent research has confirmed that offspring of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder face an increased likelihood of experiencing psychopathological issues when contrasted with those whose parents lack such conditions. This study, featured in the journal, reveals the heightened risks faced by these children. European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry examines how the clinical and social traits of parents affect the psychological well-being of their children.

The research corroborates this heightened risk and aids in gaining deeper insights into which elements impact the mental well-being issues faced by patients’ offspring," states Josefina Castro Fornieles, who leads the study and works as a researcher for the Mental Health Networking Biomedical Research Centre (CIBERSAM) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona, Hospital Clínic, and the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS). This investigation was conducted alongside the group headed by researcher Dolores Moreno from the Gregorio Marañón University Hospital in Madrid.

Over a span of four years, experts tracked the offspring of individuals diagnosed with either schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, contrasting their outcomes against those from a control group consisting of parents free from these conditions. This investigation encompassed 238 young participants aged between six and seventeen years old, each evaluated both at the start and conclusion of the timeframe under scrutiny. Throughout the research, investigators examined various factors including mental health records of both mothers/fathers and their kids, financial standing within families, maternal/paternal ages during childbearing, along with indicators suggestive of potential early stages of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder among the youth involved in the study.
