Students Rush to Aid Bus Driver During Medical Emergency

It turns out that pizza serves just as well as a token of gratitude for teenagers as anything else. A bunch of teens from the Manheim Township School District certainly merit an ample slice of appreciation.

On May 7th, as Mikel Tiedeken was driving the school bus to drop off students at their school, he lost consciousness.

"Tristan Dibbs recalls seeing him start speaking while gently swaying from side to side," he notes.

The next thing the students knew, Tiedeken fell down the stairs at the front of the bus. The incident scared a number of students.

Eighth grader Jose Martinez says, "it scared me very bad, it gave me chills."

Dibbs adds, "I remember everyone just rising up from their seats and it was still because everybody was just in shock."

It didn't take long, though, for the students to jump into action. Two students called 911 while others tried to figure out what to do next.

Everybody jumped in and began assisting him," states Martinez, "although it was somewhat chaotic, it was productive chaos.

Isabella Gonzalez, a tenth-grader, was close to the front of the bus. She attempted to assist Tiedeken who had fallen at the bottom of the stairs.

“I’m small, so I didn’t think I could accomplish much, but I sat down and lifted his arm.” Gonzalez states. “I doubt that actually made a difference, but I gave it my best shot; I attempted to assist.”

Tiedeken is okay. His doctors say he had a reaction to a new medication.

Tiedeken mentions that the experience filled his heart in an entirely new manner.

"They jumped into action right away, and I must say I am humbled by their response," remarks Tiedeken.

Brightbill Transportation, responsible for the district’s bus services, supplied the pizzas on Wednesday.

The students also received certificates of recognition from the district.
