Pittsburgh Rolls Out New Bus Lanes Downtown This Week

The upcoming stage of development for Pittsburgh Regional Transit's University Line is poised to begin, which may lead to inconvenience for motorists driving in downtown Pittsburgh.

Alterations will arrive in downtown Pittsburgh through five distinct stages. The initial phase of this project will mainly occur along Liberty Avenue as the PRT starts setting up red bus lanes.

PRT indicates that establishing exclusive bus lanes represents a significant advancement in enhancing services and decreasing traffic congestion. They believe these changes will revolutionize everyday travel routines and ensure greater consistency in public transportation.

Beginning on Monday, the setup for the red bus lanes will commence with diversions beginning at 7 a.m., and construction activities will kick off every night at 8 p.m.

Once the red bus lanes are finished in downtown Pittsburgh, routes 61A, 61B, 61C, and 71B will operate within these dedicated lanes, moving toward the city center via Fifth Avenue and away from it through Sixth Avenue.

The construction work on Liberty Avenue is anticipated to finish by 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

PRT indicates that buses will not halt at Liberty and Sixth nor Sixth and Smithfield throughout the initial stage of construction.

The four extra stages of construction will continue until May 28.
