Miraculous Rescue: Fawn Saved After Tragic Hit-and-Run

A Michigan A police officer saved a fawn—a lone survivor from a set of triplets—after its mother tragically died when hit by a vehicle, leading to an early birth due to trauma.

An officer named Frank Wright from the White Lake Township Police Department attended to a vehicle collision with a deer incident on Highland Road on Tuesday night.

When he arrived, he found out that the dead female deer was expecting and, because of the collision, was in labor with triplets. the department .

Sadly, out of the three fawns, two were already deceased; however, Wright soon observed that one appeared to have been involved in a struggle.

"It began respiring more steadily and produced some sounds, which led me to realize, hmm, this one could potentially survive," Wright stated. Fox 2 News .

"I could sense that there was faint breathing occurring, so I lifted it by its back legs and allowed the liquid to drain from its lungs," he explained.

As soon as it produced a sound, I realized this deer could potentially be fine.

The officer from the South eventually succeeded in delivering the fawn, warming it at the location, and reviving it until it started breathing independently.

"I was raised in West Virginia and essentially spent my time on a farm, so I had experience taking care of animals, particularly those that were about to give birth," Wright stated to Fox News.

Given his extensive experience delivering lambs and calves, he was well aware of what the fawn required—goat’s milk and a cozy blanket—and as soon as the early arrival, weighing only six pounds, had some nourishment from the bottle, it started to improve.

Once the tiny fawn was rescued, it was taken back to the police station. There, law enforcement officials took turns caring for the young animal—giving him milk through a vibrant pink bottle and ensuring he had a comfortable place to sleep.

The fawn required only a name at this point, which the night crew selected with great appropriateness: Little Meijer, referencing the grocery store situated directly opposite his birthplace.

Realizing that Baby Meijer required specialized attention, the Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) intervened to provide care for him and assist in restoring his health before placing him in a new home.

'The wildlife rehabilitation center en route has been designated as Baby Meijer’s new residence,' the police department posted on Facebook.

'This role occasionally exposes you to new experiences and tasks,' it continued. 'We can now check off observing deer births and providing newborn fawn care. Wishing you all the best for your future, Baby Meijer!!!'

On Thursday, the rescue organization posted an update stating that although Meijer was still weakened, his vitals were steady and he exhibited indications of getting better.

On Friday, the rescue team posted a second update on Facebook, sharing an endearing image of Baby Meijer apparently making his initial strides through a garden.

'DAWG mentioned in their post that their young one underwent comprehensive X-ray scans and was found to have two minor hip fractures besides aspiration pneumonia, as anticipated. They also stated that they initiated antibiotic treatment for the condition on Wednesday.'

The antibiotics are proving effective, and he has shown improvement with better breathing and reduced fever.

The team mentioned that although Baby Meijer doesn't qualify as a surgical candidate right now, they have planned follow-up X-rays in two weeks. The veterinarian remains optimistic about his recovery without requiring any procedures.

"He is devouring food like a champion," they commented.

By Saturday morning, the rescue organization reported thatBaby Meijer had gained weight, increasing from 6.1 pounds to 7.4 pounds.

A picture posted showed the small deer’s enclosure labeled with a ‘Meijer’ name tag akin to what employees use. The caption read, "He continues to suffer from the aspiration pneumonia he arrived with, so let's all keep him in our thoughts!"

For now, it seems Baby Meijer is on the road to a long, healthy life, surrounded by care, hope and a community rooting for him.

And none of it would've been possible if Officer Wright hadn't been in the right place at the right time - with his kind heart and Southern know-how skills ultimately saving a life when it mattered most.
