Minister Backs Worcester Chief's Epic 280KM Charity Trek

THE skills minister has thrown her support behind the University of Worcester vice chancellor's 280-kilometre charity walk.

More than £50,000 has been raised by Professor David Green to help students struggling financially.

The hike follows the coastal trail from Porto in Portugal all the way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

His walk has so far, which is a week into the 14-day challenge, raised more than £50,000 to support students experiencing tough financial situations.

The staff members, along with friends and alumni from the university, have kindly contributed donations and sent motivating messages of encouragement as he progresses on his journey.

Recent statistics show that the university’s alumni lead in maintaining steady employment post-graduation, even though a significant number of these students hail from difficult economic circumstances.

Jacqui Smith, the Minister for Skills with oversight of universities and an alumnus of the University of Worcester—where she previously studied at what was then known as the Worcester College of Higher Education—is one of numerous individuals expressing their best wishes for him via social media.

Baroness Smith, hailing from Malvern, stated: "Warmest congratulations on your walk, David, and an extremely commendable cause."

She added: "Let the sun illuminate your day, but not overly so."

Notable advocates on social media also encompass Lord Mervyn King, ex-governor of the Bank of England, Sir Nicholas Coleridge, who served as provost at Eton College and chaired the V&A Museum, along with Justine Greening, previous secretary of state for education.

Also included is Lynn Denham, the head of Worcester City Council, who praised Professor Green for "exceeding expectations in promoting student well-being in Worcester."

The funds gathered will assist students facing tough financial circumstances in finishing their studies and progressing into high-skilled positions within the job market.

The Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce has commended his efforts, with the organization facilitating numerous placements for University of Worcester students.

The vice-chancellor has additionally been contacted by numerous students and former graduates regarding the influence the university has exerted.
