Late Day Storms Still Possible as Triad Rain Winds Down

Monday's rainfall and fresher winds brought temperatures down. The highest temperature recorded at Piedmont Triad International Airport reached only 57 degrees, establishing a new record low maximum temperature for May 27th.

The amount of rain we've seen has been quite remarkable up until now.

Fresh but Wet Conditions Conclude by Wednesday

Moisture continues to flow over a stalled front draped over the Southeast, creating periods of rain and drizzle through midday Wednesday. An unsettled pattern weather pattern will soon begin to change. A warm front will lift northward through the area in the afternoon, shifting our wind direction and allowing a southerly flow of warmth and moisture to return to North Carolina. It will start to feel more humid rather than damp, and temperatures will start to trend warmer. Isolated thunderstorms may develop Wednesday afternoon along the warm front, but rainfall coverage is expected to be limited in the viewing area compared to the early part of the week.

Thursday & Friday Storms

On Thursday and Friday, conditions will start off drier earlier in the day; however, scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms remain possible with potential hazards. The Storm Prediction Center has identified an elevated risk of damaging winds for the Triad and foothill regions on Friday due to severe late-day storms.

Weekend

The upcoming weekend seems more promising weather-wise. After Friday’s system passes, drier air will move in, reducing the moisture levels over the weekend. While we shouldn’t completely dismiss the possibility of an occasional shower or thunderstorm, most areas should remain unaffected. Expect high temperatures to climb up to the mid-70s for both Saturday and Sunday.
