Jozzy Unveils New Album: Reviving Old Emotions with 'Stage Play 2 Get Her Back'
Do The Right Thing," "Boomerang," "Above The Rim," "Dead Presidents," and "Soul Food" all emerged as cornerstones within black cinema, elevating their status further with their exceptional accompanying soundtracks. Nowadays, however, musical scores appear to be receiving less attention—sometimes they're barely present at all. Exceptions include projects like "Black Panther. SINNERS —both directed by Ryan Coogler, surprisingly—the musical scores behind cinema's iconic scenes are now topics for reminiscing about times gone by. Thankfully, there is a celebrated musician from Memphis who intends to bring back that sense of nostalgia in multiple forms.
"I developed my passion for R&B via soundtracks," he states. Jozzy , a singer-songwriter poised on the verge of superstardom, boasts an impressive résumé. "They played a significant role in shaping who I am. There were times when I'd watch a movie featuring a fantastic song during a key moment, and I'd exclaim, 'Wow—that track blew me away.' That's how I discovered much of my own music. But nowadays, I’m not sure what became of film soundtracks—I believe they've become somewhat of a forgotten craft."
Jocelyn Adriene Donald, who emerged under the moniker Jozzy, placed significant importance on integrating music and cinematic experiences to convey her complete narrative. In "STAGE PLAY 2 GET HER BACK," she fused theatrical arts with performance during her inaugural show. Held exclusively once at North Hollywood’s El Portal Theatre, this presentation offered spectators an insight into Jozzy’s dynamic artistic progression. Among the ensemble were actors such as Clarke Lauren, Janina Gavankar, Angel Ann Craig, Khadi Don, and Sarae; the script crafted by Brianca Williams, musical score composed by Stevie J, and visuals directed by Pierre York. For the artist, this project embodied not just personal enthusiasm but also deeper intent, which resonated profoundly through every aspect of the staging.
Participating in this performance felt like an out-of-body experience, and I really enjoy carving my own path," Jozzy shares with The News Pulse. "My aim was to create something groundbreaking so that people could engage with music differently." Nowadays, typical date nights often involve activities beyond simply having dinner and watching a film, which Donald recognizes well. She explains, "Individuals desire experiences that deviate from routine." Hence, she believes combining these two realms—dinner and theater—is a fantastic idea since they complement each other perfectly.

STAGE PLAY 2 TO WIN HER BACK also acted as an appropriate preview for her forthcoming album scheduled for release later this year. With years of experience under her belt, Jozzy is well-versed in creativity. She has penned hits like "Old Town Road," "Mr. Right Now," SZA’s "Love Galore," and Beyoncé’s "Virgo’s Groove," among many more. Additionally, she has been featured alongside artists such as Lil' Wayne, Lecrae, and ScHoolBoy Q. However, at age 34, Jozzy aims to present a fresh chapter in her musical journey to global audiences.
"People haven't had the chance to listen to my original work as an artist yet," she clarifies. "Being part of Q's latest album was truly a blessing, just like being featured in '10' alongside Fred Again—one of the most prominent house tracks around. Still, those releases aren't quite the same as putting out something personal under my name—a piece that allows listeners into my thoughts and emotions." Although this isn't Jozzy's initial venture as a standalone performer (check out 2023's *Songs for Women, Free Game for N****s*), her forthcoming album titled *Soundtrack 2 Get Her Back* holds special significance.
To see this collection released into the world will be quite significant for me," she remarks. Jozzy initiated the promotion for S2GHB by releasing Maybe ," serving as the opening chapter in her cinematic exploration of romance and strife. Despite feeling that she has "more significant tracks on the album," the artist chose to showcase vulnerability with this specific song. Drawing inspiration from an iconic R&B/soul figure, Jozzy remarks, "We really needed something like this in our environment."
"I simply felt compelled to share this because as I mentioned earlier, I asked myself 'What would Anita Baker do?' (This was related to her Grammy Award-winning performance in 1994’s “ I Apologize ," a track that Jozzy found to be quite distinctive, at minimum.” She released [that song], and there hasn’t been a record of a woman apologizing to a man ever since,” she adds with a hearty chuckle.
As an artist with several accolades to her name, penning hits for Chris Brown, Summer Walker, Mary J. Blige, Chlöe, and the aforementioned collection of entertainers, Jozzy still has a layer to her that has yet to be seen. With Soundtrack 2 Get Her Back she wants listeners to not only enjoy the music, but to understand all that goes into her process, and just how hard she works at her craft. “I want them to see the vulnerability,” she notes. “I want them to see the student in me.”
Last year, as an artist, I didn’t release anything," Jozzy says. "The previous year was marked by darkness for me. I believe I had to cleanse myself. I feel like I needed to turn to prayer. It was essential for me to discover my true purpose—this album represents that journey for me.
