Gun Violence Surges in Memphis: Violent Crimes Rise Sharply Compared to Last Year, Statistics Reveal
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The Memphis Shelby Crime Commission has unveiled fresh statistics indicating an increase in firearm usage in violent offenses during the initial months of 2025 as opposed to the corresponding period the previous year.
The commission references statistics provided by the Memphis Police Department.
They analyze incidents of gun-related violence reported as crimes from January through March 2025 against those recorded during the identical months in 2024.

Although the incidence of gun-related violent offenses alone decreased by 8.6% compared to last year, when examining all Incidents of violence reported in Memphis over this timeframe—which includes but is not restricted to homicides, severe assaults, rapes, and domestic abuse—saw an increase in the number of such offenses involving firearms this year as opposed to the previous one.
In the initial three months of 2024, 70.1% of all violent crimes included the use of firearms.
In the same period of 2025, 72.4% of all instances of violent crime included the use of firearms, marking an uptick of 2.3%.
Figures were likewise published regarding domestic violence cases specifically.
Firearms were present in 50.8% of domestic abuse cases last year. This year, this percentage climbed to 54.8%, marking a rise of 4%.

The Memphis Shelby Crime Commission additionally supplied information regarding the frequency with which firearms were recorded as being taken from vehicles through theft.
According to that data, there was a 12.4% drop in reports of firearms taken from vehicles in the first quarter of this year compared to last year.

It should be remembered that recorded offenses do not equate to the true total of crimes carried out.
