Grandma Accused of Sneaking Meth Across the Border

EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM — On Sunday, May 4, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the Paso Del Norte port of entry in El Paso confiscated over 70 pounds of methamphetamine from a grandmother who was traveling with her family. This information was released in an official statement by CBP.

The narcotics were concealed within a car operated by a 55-year-old American grandmother. She was accompanied by her teenage grandchild during the incident, according to CBP statements.

This isn’t the first instance where CBP has come across grandparents trafficking drugs whilst traveling with their families," stated CBP El Paso Port Director Ray Provencio. "These smugglers resort to various deceptive tactics to mix in with regular travelers, aiming to reduce suspicions about their illegal activities.

The arrest took place shortly before midday on Sunday as a 2006 Honda Accord carrying two occupants entered from Mexico. Upon noticing an object within the car’s rear quarter panel during the initial check, a CBP officer operating at the main inspection station directed the vehicle for further examination.

A canine from CBP trained for detecting drugs inspected the vehicle and indicated the presence of narcotics, according to CBP.

The CBP stated that an X-ray scan revealed irregularities in the vehicle’s appearance.

The CBP agents proceeded with the inspection and found 57 drug-packed packages within the vehicle.

The CBP officers took into custody the driver, who was then handed over to the Texas Department of Public Safety to be charged for her involvement in the unsuccessful smuggling operation, according to CBP statements.
