Tim is a friend, and as I mentioned earlier, I pictured him without informing him of this until after completing my work and sending it off to him," DeYoung explained. "My aim wasn’t to dilute the film’s impact; rather, I sought to intensify its frightening elements for potential investors—to gauge their willingness to step into the trenches with me and explore new territory.

"Friendship," produced by Fifth Season and BoulderLight Pictures, was picked up by A24 after its premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. The film stars Paul Rudd and Kate Mara alongside each other.

“It wasn’t really a solidified friendship; rather, it was more about desire,” DeYoung added to The News Pulse regarding how the story began. “I believed a friendship was developing, yet this individual seemed far less intrigued than I had anticipated. It made me realize, we often witness romantic versions of these scenarios, but rarely do we see them depicted among middle-aged heterosexual males. These relationships occur frequently—men form bonds and face conflicts within those connections. While 'I Love You, Man' captures some aspects of this, I wondered what my take on such a situation would look like, something truer to my own experiences. So, that’s where the concept originated.”

And now, that reality is even closer to actuality with the IRL experience. Browse through our selections below.
