Cockshut Honors Math Whiz Kids on National Numeracy Day

Cockshut Hill School, part of the Summit Learning Trust, is celebrating an outstanding achievement in the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Junior Mathematical Challenge, with 29 learners earning medals for their exceptional problem-solving skills.

Among the medallists, two learners have now been invited to participate in the prestigious Junior Mathematical Olympiad and Junior Kangaroo competitions, recognising their exceptional mathematical abilities. These follow-on rounds are designed to challenge the brightest young minds in mathematics and provide opportunities for further development.

In addition to these remarkable achievements, ITV Central visited the school to film a segment featuring the talented learners and their teachers, highlighting the importance of numeracy education ahead of National Numeracy Day on the 21st of May.

National Numeracy Day is a nationwide initiative that brings together thousands of schools to celebrate the importance of numeracy in young people’s lives. Numeracy, the ability to use maths in everyday situations , is a vital life skill, whether at home, in school, or in the workplace.

This year’s theme focuses on money and personal finance, following new research from the charity National Numeracy which reveals that one in three adults are keen to improve their maths skills to better manage their money.

At Cockshut Hill School, the maths curriculum is designed to help all learners build confidence, enjoyment, and essential skills in areas like numeracy, algebra, geometry, and statistics. They want every child to be able to apply their maths knowledge in everyday life, solve problems, and be fully prepared for further study or the world of work. Enrichment opportunities, such as codebreaking workshops and finance lessons, help learners see the value and possibilities that studying maths can bring.

Jason Bridges, Principal at Cockshut Hill School, said:

"We are incredibly proud of our learners’ achievements in the UK Maths Challenge. Their dedication and enthusiasm for mathematics are truly inspiring. This success reflects the hard work of both our learners and staff, and we look forward to supporting them as they continue to excel in their mathematical journeys."
