City Welcomes a Rodent Renaissance: 50 Giant Rats Take Over the Art Trail

A town is getting ready to host 50 large rat statues along its streets as part of an innovative art walk aimed at celebrating a nearby musical artist.

"A Mischief of Rats" will go on exhibit starting May 3rd in Hull, showcasing 6-foot-tall (1.8-meter) painted rat statues along a walking path through the city for public enjoyment.

The art trail was established to honor rock musician Mick Ronson, who hailed from Hull and was part of the local 1960s group the Rats prior to joining forces with David Bowie as his guitarist.

Co-director Clare Huby previously mentioned that the trail would be inaugurated before what would have been the artist's 80th birth anniversary on May 26, 2026.

She stated, "People in Hull have been eager to have an initiative that honors Mick Ronson, so this appeared to be the ideal chance."

Ms. Huby mentioned that the project would additionally benefit the Daisy Appeal charity, which aids Cottingham's Castle Hill Hospital, through the sale of the sculptures at an auction scheduled for September.

The charitable organization aims to amass as much as £250,000 for "pioneering studies" focused on cancer.

Mick Ronson passed away due to cancer in 1993 at the age of 46.

The art trail, akin to earlier initiatives such as Larkin with Toads, A Moth for Amy, and Puffins Galore, will continue through August.
