Carmelo Anthony's Uplifting Graduation Speech Leaves Lasting Impression at Syracuse

Syracuse University (WSYR-TV) — An alumnus of Syracuse University and ex-NBA player, Carmelo Anthony, came back to the JMA Wireless Dome to be the main speaker at the 2025 graduation event attended by numerous students and their families.

Anthony began his address by addressing the graduates with, "Wow, what an incredible moment, truly a full-circle experience." Reflecting on his days within the dome, he reminisced about playing basketball and helping Syracuse secure their first-ever NCAA men’s basketball title back in 2003.

This building served as the launching pad for my journey through life, and after 22 years... to be back here now, not wearing a jersey but standing on this platform addressing you—it feels like life has truly come full circle. ”

Anthony praised their efforts, emphasizing the difficulties faced by these graduates and how the worldwide pandemic has rendered them even stronger, wiser, and more resilient.

He recounted tales from his life’s journey, speaking about growing up in Baltimore with "basketball aspirations and immense drive." He highlighted how Syracuse laid the foundation for his achievements. While primarily recognized for his time on the court, he encouraged students by sharing how he shifted gears—from playing ball to starting a podcast and dedicating himself to charitable work.

You don't need to confine yourself to one role," he stated. "It’s possible to pursue several career paths. You can transform time and again as long as you continue pursuing what ignites your spirit.

Anthony reminded graduates of the importance of remembering where they came from, reflecting on his commitment to giving back through foundations and scholarships. He encouraged graduates to do the same by investing in their communities, reminding them, “It’s what you stand for when nobody’s watching.”

Anthony also mentioned his son Kiyan, urging the graduates to remember that Kiyan has recently become a college student himself.

"Seeing him stride through the same hallways and sport the same colors... ranks as one of the most proud moments of my life," he stated.

As he concluded his address, Anthony inspired the graduates with these words: "Take the orange along... Have courage. Show compassion. Stay persistent. Lead a meaningful life. Offer support. Respect your origins. Pursue your aspirations, and feel free to revise your journey as needed."

‘ Congrats, graduates! Happy Mother’s Day, and whenever you're unsure, remember to keep it Melo. Embrace the orange! ‘
