Cadet's Journey: Joining the USS Oak Hill for Thrilling Fleet Week in NYC
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Several local sailors have made their way to New York City for the grand military event during Fleet Week. This gathering not only provides entertainment and interaction between servicemen and -women but also offers valuable chances for young cadets to get hands-on experience aboard naval vessels, some of them experiencing such conditions for the very first time.
When she was 14 years old, Sara Magee, who was born in San Diego during her dad's service there, had the opportunity to participate in Fleet Week as part of the Sea Cadets.
“The moment we arrived, the team welcomed us into their fold right away,” Magee stated.
Embarking from Little Creek, they left Norfolk this week for Manhattan. It was her first time onboard a Navy ship. From the engine room to the flight deck, she got to see it all — living the life of a sailor.
She mentioned, 'Getting to live aboard the ship, snoozing in the berths, dining at the mess deck—experiencing all facets of naval life, from dawn till dusk. We wore identical uniforms which made us feel as though we were truly part of the team. That sense of belonging was incredibly rewarding.'
Magee expressed appreciation for seeing the options firsthand since she’s considering potentially enlisting in the Marines following her conversation with those aboard.
The USS Oak Hill will join forces with the USS New York in New York City for an upcoming period of several days. Hundreds of Marines and sailors are expected to remain in town during this time to participate in numerous activities taking place both aboard and ashore.
