Baton Rouge Honors Mayor Kip Holden with a Final Farewell

BATON ROUGE, La. ( Louisiana First On Thursday, Baton Rouge gathered to bid farewell to formerMayor-President Melvin "Kip" Holden, a towering figure inpublic service. The church was brimming with family members,friends, and political figures all coming together at theGreater King David Baptist Church to pay tribute tothe leader who significantly transformed theCapital City through his stewardship.

"His voice had a golden quality," remarked Southern University Chancellor John Pierre during the ceremony.

Holden, who died at the age of 72, became historic in 2004 when he was elected as Baton Rouge’s inaugural Black mayor-president. During his tenure, which spanned three consecutive terms, he concentrated on fostering unity, enhancing public safety, and promoting economic growth within the city.

"I believe he was the finest mayor during our lifetimes, and I’m not sure when we'll encounter someone even more exceptional," stated Rannah Gray, a long-time friend and ex-campaign advisor.

During his tenure, Holden played a key role in reshaping the downtown district and guided the city through significant occurrences such as the historic influx of tens of thousands of refugees amid Hurricane Katrina.

“You just need to hop into your vehicle or stroll downtown. Observe the enhancements made to the sidewalks. See how the Town Center has transformed,” stated Jeff LeDuff, who serves as the Assistant Chief Administrative Officer for Baton Rouge.

"We experienced something unprecedented—the Hurricane Katrina—which led to a whole city essentially relocating into ours," LeDuff added.

Daniel, who had previously worked alongside William Holden in the mayor’s office, noted that Holden excelled in challenging situations far better than most people.

He truly rose to the occasion. That’s when I recognized we might have one of the most dynamic leaders in the nation right here in Baton Rouge.

Outside of his professional environment, Holden was recognized for being a dedicated spouse, parent to five children, and a guide to numerous individuals. Despite stepping down from his role as mayor, he stayed engaged in community affairs, striving to motivate the upcoming cohort of leadership figures.

His legacy conveys a message to those who dream: continue pushing forward despite any challenges," stated Brandon Lewis from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. "If you remain authentic and dedicated to your purpose, success will follow.

Although the town grieves for him, people who were close to him believe his influence continues. This legacy persists through each initiative he influenced, everyone whose life he altered, and all the emerging leaders he guided.

Kip Holden is leaves behind his spouse, Lois Stevenson, along with their five offspring. His impact will stand as a fundamental part of Baton Rouge’s past—and an inspirational wellspring for generations ahead.
