Andor Season 2 Unveils the Ultimate Answer to Star Wars Fans’ Biggest Question

This article includes spoilers for "Andor" Season 2, Episodes 10-12. .

Since his introduction, he has been known as "Andor" As one of the rebellion's principal founders in season 1, "Star Wars" Fans have been curious about Luthen Rael's (Stellan Skarsgård) final destiny. It seemed unlikely that he could have survived the events of the Original Trilogy, where the Rebel Alliance fights against the Galactic Empire, without appearing or being referenced at all.

For "Star Wars" enthusiasts, this apparent improbability suggested from the start that it was improbable Luthen would survive until the conclusion of "Andor." These expectations are confirmed in "Andor" Season 2, Episode 10, where they bid farewell to Luthen as both he and the audience had resigned themselves to expect. The silver lining? Despite being backed into a corner, Luthen retains control over how he exits in "Andor."

What happens to Luthen in season two of "Andor"?

In the first episode of "Andor" Season 2, Episode 10, Luthen gets an important communication from his ISB informant, Lonni Jung (played by Robert Emms). Lonni reveals under the guise of promised safety for himself and his loved ones that he found within Dedra Meero’s (portrayed by Denise Gough) private documents; the Empire's vaunted power initiative is actually a ruse concealing the development of the Death Star. Upon hearing this revelation, Luthen eliminates Lonni and collaborates with his aide, Kleya (acted by Elizabeth Dulau), to obliterate every trace of their insurgent activities. They then devise plans to flee Coruscant and relay their findings to the Rebel Alliance.

Before Luthen can finalize his scheme, he is unexpectedly visited at his antiquities shop by Dedra herself, who catches him as he attempts to dismantle the hidden rebel communication system within the store. Dedra discloses that she recognizes Luthen as Axis—the elusive rebel leader whom she has tirelessly pursued—and informs him that a platoon of Imperial troops is stationed just outside his shop. With evident satisfaction, she declares her eagerness to apprehend and question him. However, Luthen remains unfazed by both Dedra’s statements and threats. As she revels in what she believes to be her triumph, he impales himself using an ancient dagger.

Dedra summons her Imperial reinforcements and ensures that the critically injured Luthen is rushed to a hospital on Coruscant for treatment and subsequent interrogation. Despite these moments feeling incredibly significant and pressing at the time, they make up just the initial segment of “Andor” Season 2, Episode 10. The remainder of the episode centers around Kleya as she stealthily infiltrates the facility holding Luthen, using an ingeniously placed blast to divert the attention of the Imperial sentries before cutting off all life support to his comatose form.

While Kleya executes her daring raid at the hospital, "Andor" periodically shifts to earlier times to reveal how she initially encountered Luthen when she was an abandoned child sneaking aboard his vessel during a fierce conflict. Having grown disillusioned with both the Empire’s aggressive tactics and his own part in their military operations as a soldier, Luthen chose desertion and subsequently welcomed Kleya into his family. Together, they gradually amassed greater authority, riches, and clout, all aimed towards reaching a stage where they could actively oppose the Empire.

Although Kleya had to comply with Luthen’s desires and aid in his demise, she manages to survive the occurrences depicted in “Andor.” Assisted by Cassian, she successfully escapes from Coruscant and joins him along with Vel (played by Faye Marsay) on Yavin. In a sense, Luthen triumphs as well—he ignites the flame of revolution and provides the nascent rebellion with the impetus and fortitude required for self-sustained growth. This sentiment echoes what he conveys to Dedra during their last encounter: “It’s too late now; the rebellion has moved beyond this place—it has taken wing.”
