Volkswagen GTI Set for Power Boost

Last week in New York, we witnessed Volkswagen introduce a new engine. Indeed, this is the EA888 Evo 5, expected to produce 268 horsepower for use in vehicles. "I'd be quite surprised if we don’t include an Evo 5 in the upcoming iteration of the GTI,” stated Mark Gillies, the PR director for Volkswagen USA, during the inaugural driving event for the 2025 GTI and Golf R. “While I can't confirm whether it will retain 268 horsepower, let’s just say that the subsequent Atlas model will feature the Evo 5.”

Although this doesn't serve as official word on the evolution of the GTI - it's reassuring to hear that the essence of the GTI will likely stay consistent in the upcoming version. Volkswagen initially launched the EA888 turbocharged inline-four engine approximately two decades ago, back in 2006.

For those of you who are enthusiasts when it comes to engines, significant modifications to the Evo 5 engine consist of an updated turbocharger, intercooler, fuel injection system, and camshaft configuration. The compression ratio has also seen an increase, with internal components strengthened through the use of a bigger crankpin and shorter connecting rods designed to support more robust pistons.

The turbocharger now features a variable geometry design, and the fuel pressure has been boosted to 500 bar. This engine operates using the Miller cycle and targets λ=1 across all load conditions, akin to the 2025 Porsche 911 GTS Hybrid.
