USS Harry S. Truman: Aircraft Loss in Red Sea Tied to Tow Tractor Incident
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — While conducting operations in the Red Sea, the Norfolk-based USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) experienced two significant losses: one F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet and one tow tractor were both reported missing on Monday.
When the movement team was towing the Super Hornet, they lost control of it. The aircraft then went into the water and is currently missing at sea. Fortunately, the movement crew managed to get away safely in time. A single sailor sustained a slight injury.
The Super Hornet that was lost belonged to Strike Fighter Squadron VFA-136. This squadron formed part of the USS Harry S. Truman along with the nine squadrons making up Carrier Air Wing 1, three guided-missile destroyers from Destroyer Squadron 28, and the Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64).
The event is presently being looked into.
On February 12, the USS Harry S. Truman experienced a collision in the Mediterranean Sea, causing damage to the aircraft carrier. It proceeded to Greece for repair work.
