US Unveils Final Peace Proposal to End Russian-Ukraine Conflict: Key Details Emerge
The outlines of the United States' "definitive" peace plan to end Russia's assault on Ukraine have become clear.
The proposal, along with various discussions amongst European leaders, centers on halting the fighting at current positions in the continuing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
A preliminary version of the U.S. proposal, reviewed by Axios and The Telegraph, indicated that Russia would be granted formal acknowledgment of its control over Crimea, tacit acceptance of its occupation of large parts of eastern Ukraine, and assurances that Ukraine wouldn’t join NATO, though it might still become part of the European Union (EU).
Additionally, the document states that although Ukraine would keep administrative authority over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, management responsibilities would fall under U.S. oversight. The U.S. would also be responsible for providing electrical power to both Ukraine and Russia.
Three individuals privy to the negotiations aimed at concluding the war informed The Guardian UK that Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed willingness to essentially halt military advancements as part of accepting certain conditions.
As reported by Financial Times, besides acknowledging Russia’s authority over Crimea, the U.S. would provide significant easing of economic sanctions against Russia.
Recall that the Vice president of the United States, JD Vance, confirmed on Wednesday that his country would seek to “freeze the territorial lines at some level close to where they are today”, adding that some territory could change hands.
The present boundaries, or something near them, are where you're eventually going to delineate the new lines in the conflict.
"Now, naturally, this implies that both the Ukrainians and the Russians will need to relinquish some of the territories they presently control," he stated.
However, accounts of the U.S. proposal do not encompass other Russian government requirements, such as restricting the potential future size of Ukraine’s armed forces or prohibiting international troops within the nation.
Imposing sanctions relief on Russia’s energy sector might allow the Kremlin to boost essential revenue streams that have been disrupted due to the invasion.
In response, Ukraine was set to gain a "strong security assurance" from a specially formed coalition of European countries; however, the proposal did not outline the specifics of how this peacekeeping force would function or confirm whether the United States would be involved.
Ukraine would additionally be guaranteed unrestricted access through the Dnieper River and receive certain territories in the Kharkiv area, coupled with loosely outlined commitments for forthcoming financial assistance to aid reconstruction efforts.
