The power of partnership: A District Judge and his Court Coordinator

ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) - Today (4/23/25) marks National Administrative Professionals’ Day—a day to recognize the hard-working individuals who keep offices running efficiently. From secretaries to assistants and coordinators, these professionals are often the backbone of any organization.

In the Ector County Courthouse within the 358th District Court, the collaboration between Judge John Shrode and his Court Coordinator, Martha Acosta, exemplifies the crucial contribution made by support staff who operate behind the curtains.

The pair recently reached two years of working together. Judge Shrode joked that he “stole” her from the District Attorney’s office and that he’s, “not sorry about it”. He describes Acosta as determined, thoughtful, and incredibly professional. The feeling is mutual.

"Don't wait for Administrative Professionals Day to show appreciation; support them consistently and be grateful for their efforts daily," stated Judge Shrode.

Acosta mentions that she observed his behavior in court and was quite impressed. Upon seeing the job opening, she realized it was an opportunity she desired to chase.

"This is an esteemed role. Essentially, I'm employed by a judge—a district judge. Deep down, I've always aspired to be in this kind of position, and now I am. It's challenging, requires dedication, and genuine desire," Acosta stated.

She finds fulfillment in her role—understanding that the position carries both duty and significance.

Her commitment does not go unobserved.

"Besides being a top-notch worker, she is genuinely compassionate. She truly values the individuals around her and consistently shows each person honor and respect. Even when some do not reciprocate this respect towards her, she continues to be courteous," stated Judge Shrode.

After spending so much time together every day, they've formed a bond that cannot be expressed with mere words.

“If I need to, like, reach out to him and, like, say something to him, but he’s busy or whatever, he knows for some reason—like he sees an expression on my face—and is like, ‘What is it? Were you gonna say something?’ And I’m like, ‘Yes, Judge, how do you know?’” said Acosta.

The working relationship between the two is built on respect, care—and a bit of unspoken understanding. But it also goes beyond just the workday.

“When I’m out of town, she takes my robes and gets them cleaned. She cleans my desk. You know, if my tie doesn’t look right, she’ll say, ‘Judge, come here, let me fix your tie.’ I don’t ask her to do these things, but if I want a drink, she’ll say, ‘Judge, can I get you something?’ She’s just a wonderful person. She tries to anticipate my needs before I even know they’re there,” said Judge Shrode.

For Acosta, the ease of surpassing expectations stems from being in such a nurturing setting.

"If I face an issue, I can approach him, and he readily listens. Perhaps that's why I find it easier to exceed expectations and take on more responsibilities since he is truly remarkable," she stated.

If you haven't had the chance yet today to acknowledge the administrative professionals around you, take heed of Judge Shrode's guidance: Don't limit your appreciation to just a single day. However, should you have missed doing so earlier, remember it's never too late to express your gratitude towards them.
