Syracuse Residents Speak Out on National Grid's Proposed Rate Hike
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — With National Grid now requesting an increase in prices potentially reaching up to $14 more for electricity and $7.66 extra for natural gas within the initial year alone, numerous consumers find themselves facing difficulties affording their bills.
Although the firm claims that the three-level structure is essential for sustained investment, consumers are raising worries regarding the economic consequences.
The suggested price hike comes during a period when people appear to be spending more on items like food, fuel, and essential goods. A shopper went as far as questioning when these costs will rise significantly enough to become unsustainable.
"Prices are soaring by 100%, 200%, 300%, and even 400%, yet wages remain stagnant. Salaries aren’t doubling or tripling; thus, people feel this huge impact," stated Ann Cox-Smith, a customer from Syracuse.
A customer who talked to NewsChannel 9 mentioned that the issue goes beyond the rate increase. This person revealed that unpaid charges are getting transferred to other individuals' accounts. As a result, despite maintaining timely payments, your bill could still go up.
"When residents foot the bill for others who incur $5,000 and $10,000 utility charges, everyone else has to cover the gap, which is why their expenses end up being significantly higher," explained a Manilus resident named Richard Suatoni.
From what we're gathering, since a public meeting has been scheduled, numerous individuals will likely voice their opinions.
