Switch to Login.gov: Ensure Secure Access to Social Security Online

Switching to Login.gov represents a major shift for those who established their My Social Security personal accounts prior to September 18, 2021. Such users will be required to create a new Login.gov account—or log in with an existing Login.gov or ID.me account—in order to keep utilizing online services. Users who set up their account on or after September 18, 2021, do not have to take any action at this time.
The objective of this update is to streamline the login process, boost online safety measures, and comply with government-mandated identity verification protocols. Starting from March 29, 2025, individuals using their Social Security credentials for logging in must switch to Login.gov to continue accessing digital services. By the end of the year, the choice to “Log in via your Social Security ID” will be eliminated entirely; therefore, timely action is advised.
There are two authorized credential service providers:
Login.gov serves as your unified gateway for accessing various U.S. governmental bodies with ease, ensuring a streamlined, safe, and confidential login experience. This platform enables you to manage your Social Security data along with numerous other federal services and entitlements. Should you require assistance, head over to the Login.gov Help Center.
ID.me serves as a unified login service compliant with federal standards for identity verification and authentication. There’s no necessity to establish a dedicated ID.me account specifically for Social Security purposes; your current account is versatile enough to cater to both governmental and commercial services. Should you require help, head over to the ID.me Support Center.
Steps for transitioning accounts set up prior to September 18, 2021:
- Upon entering your Social Security username, you'll be asked to switch to Login.gov for authentication.
- You will receive guidance on setting up a Login.gov account, but you also have the option to sign in using either an existing Login.gov or ID.me account.
