South Buffalo Family Rebuilds Their Lives After Devastating Fire
SOUTH BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A family in South Buffalo is working to rebuild their lives following a catastrophic fire earlier this month. The blaze occurred when both of their young children were still inside; however, a quick-thinking neighbor entered and rescued them.
On April 15, Ron Bess and his wife, Kenetria Maddox, began their day much as they always did. That morning, Ron departed to drop off his two younger children at daycare, while he let his two elder daughters stay at home.
After dropping them off at daycare, my plan was to pick up some groceries," explained Bess. "But right after finishing with the shopping, I received a call from a friend informing me that our house was on fire.
Bess told WIVB News 4 the fire started in the upstairs apartment at 89 Parkview Ave. It quickly spread downstairs, where his two daughters were lying on the couch.
When I received the call, I felt quite anxious," stated Bess. "My eldest daughter wasn't picking up her phone. I had no idea what might be happening.
Bess hurried home filled with fear, uncertain for quite a while whether his daughters had managed to escape unharmed. Upon arrival, he discovered them safe and sound outside.
Scottie, who was a neighbor, noticed the smoke and fire and immediately sprang into action.
“He asked the people upstairs if there was anybody downstairs,” said Bess. “He looked in the window and said, there’s two little girls.”
Scottie and his companions went into the building and managed to get the girls out safely.
It remains a moment that sends shivers through the family. The neighbor who rescued their daughters had planned to head off to work early that morning. However, Bess mentioned that some instinct made Scottie decide to remain behind.
It was traumatic. I'm just glad they're alright," stated Kenetria Maddox. "The situation could have taken a completely different turn.
The family has lost everything in the fire, but now they're starting to rebuild their lives.
They have recently relocated to a new residence and plan to hold a drive-thru housewarming event. People can come by anytime between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on May 3 to make contributions for their fresh beginning. Feel free to send your messages through. Ron Bess for the address.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page where all contributions will be used to assist them in rebuilding their home. Should you wish to contribute, you may do so here. here .
