Sioux City Celebrates Arbor Day with a Trio of New Trees
SIoux City, Iowa (KCAU) — The inaugural Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872, in Nebraska. In 1885, Nebraska designated Arbor Day as an official public holiday. Currently, Arbor Day is observed annually across the nation on the final Friday of April.
To celebrate Arbor Day, the city of Sioux City added three new trees to the area just west of the Seaboard Triumph Foods Expo Center. These newly planted specimens are Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry trees, known for reaching heights between 20 and 25 feet with showy large white blooms during springtime.
It's often mentioned that we plant trees for the benefit of future generations," explained Kelly Bach from the Sioux City Parks and Recreation Department. "By considering the long-term impact for our children and grandchildren—to ensure they can enjoy the shade, breathe cleaner air, reduce heating bills, and lower their overall energy consumption—we're essentially investing in a sustainable tomorrow.
Bach estimates that it will be around two decades before these trees reach full maturity.
