Rescued: Tiny Fishers Found on South Shore

Following the discovery of three young fisher kits inside a tree cavity that was felled in Cohasset on Earth Day, local authorities intervened. The infant animals are currently under the care of the New England Wildlife Center.

Fishers, often referred to as "fisher cats," belong to the mustelid family, which encompasses animals like weasels, badgers, and otters. The brothers were found among a cluster of trees in Cohasset that had been felled and moved to Stoughton for processing.

“The New England Wildlife Center shared on Facebook that as they unloaded the logs, they found three babies hidden within the stack of timber.” post .

The Stoughton Animal Control team transferred the fisher kits to the New England Wildlife Center’s clinic in Weymouth for a comprehensive examination, which revealed no signs of injury. As the young animals showed only slight dehydration, veterinarians provided hydration therapy with fluids and electrolytes before returning them to their original location, aiming to reunite them with their mother.

The Cohasset Police Department’s Natural Resources Officer, Josh Kimball, along with the Hingham Police Department’s Animal Control Officer, Leslie Badger, helped with this operation. When the following day arrived, the infants were still present at the scene; thus, they have been returned into the care of the New England Wildlife Center.

"Despite the failure, attempting a reunion is always worthwhile when the infants are in good health, as this ensures whether they are genuinely orphaned and require extended care at the rehabilitation center," stated the New England Wildlife Center on their Facebook page.

The fishermen will keep receiving care throughout the spring and summer seasons until they reach an age suitable for their release back into the wilderness.

"It's sad that they faced such difficult beginnings, but we appreciate the efforts of everyone involved who ensured they received the necessary assistance and found themselves in the appropriate location," stated the New England Wildlife Center in their post.
