Pygmy Sperm Whale Calf Strands on Emerald Isle, Succumbs Before Rescue Team Arrives

A young pygmy sperm whale perished after getting stranded at Emerald Isle on Wednesday, April 23.
The CMAST at North Carolina State University reports that the mother dolphin was not observed prior to, during, or following the intervention of the NC Aquarium Stranding Team and CMAST staff. According to authorities, the calf passed away shortly before they reached the location.
Pygmy sperm whales inhabit deep waters far from shore, primarily feeding on squids, and are seldom observed in their natural habitat as they typically remain submerged for long periods. Sadly, these creatures frequently beach themselves in groups consisting of mothers and calves, with numerous instances involving live strandings. The majority of our knowledge regarding this species stems from examinations of beached specimens.
