Porsche Teases Legal-Ready 917K successor for the Road

Nearly half a century ago, around this time, a single Porsche 917 departed from Weissach heading towards Paris. This wasn’t in an enclosed trailer, as you might expect for such a prestigious race car. Rather, it set off using its own capabilities, traveling across regular highways.

The transformation of the endurance-racing 917 with chassis number 30 into a road-going supercar was commissioned by Teofilo Guiscardo Rossi di Montelera, known as "Count Rossi" among his peers. This modification involved installing exhaust silencers for the raucous 5.0-liter flat-12 engine; however, these had minimal impact on its magnificent roar. The seating area was covered in tan-colored Hermès leather, whereas the rest of the cabin featured black suedes. Additionally, necessary components such as headlights, side mirrors, and horns were incorporated into the design.

Recently refreshed yet retaining its original interior and Martini Silver paint job, this vehicle continues to exhilarate its owner as they drive through the south of France. Porsche recently captured footage of the car in its present condition and shared with us a glimpse into what it feels like to experience a racing-inspired automobile amidst the picturesque landscapes of rural France. Additionally, they provided tantalizing hints about an impending release scheduled for June. All we have so far is a silhouette, but it's quite recognizable—it’s the 963. When Porsche posed the question "What if?" one can easily envision how a 963 might look dressed up akin to the legendary 917K road car. Could a street-legal version of the 963 be Weissach’s response? Red Bull’s RB17 and the Aston Martin Valkyrie It certainly appears so.
