Petersburg's Medical Classroom Revolution: $25K Grant Fuels State-of-the-Art Transformation

In Petersburg, a middle school has introduced an engaging medical classroom. Working together with Petersburg City Public Schools, Communities In Schools of Petersburg, Inc. (CIS-Petersburg), and HCA Virginia have launched a pioneering alliance designed to boost educational prospects for middle schoolers who aspire to enter the medical profession.

A $25,000 grant from HCA Healthcare Capital Division Virginia enabled this project. This advanced medical classroom offers practical learning opportunities and early insights into the different career paths within the healthcare industry.

The medical classroom is set up to mimic actual medical settings, featuring cutting-edge medical equipment, anatomical models, and interactive educational resources. As part of this collaboration, learners will participate in hands-on activities and benefit from mentorship by seasoned health care providers, thus crafting an engaging educational atmosphere that nurtures inquiry and aspiration.

“By collaborating with HCA Healthcare, we are committed to inspiring the next generation of medical professionals,” Wanda Stewart, President/CEO at CIS-Petersburg, said. “Early exposure to medical careers can ignite passion and confidence in students, equipping them with the knowledge they need to pursue their aspirations in the healthcare field.”

St. Petersburg: Medical classes in middle school

Stewart showed excitement regarding the partnership with HCA Healthcare, highlighting how it would spark student interest in healthcare professions. He pointed out that Petersburg City Public Schools provides an excellent setting for such an endeavor.

The medical classroom will also include guest lectures, workshops and mentorship opportunities, providing students with direct access to industry experts. This initiative aims to increase awareness of the diverse roles within the medical field, from medicine and nursing to medical technology and healthcare administration.

Partnerships between academia and communities are an integral part of our commitment to enhancing and safeguarding human life," stated Dr. Yvette Dorsey, who serves as the associate vice president of academic affairs at HCA Virginia. "Initiatives such as strategic educational support and training programs, exemplified by these collaborations with schools in Petersburg, play a crucial role in bolstering the healthcare sector while providing students with chances to delve into their interests.

This collaboration between HCA Virginia and CIS-Petersham is transformative for our students," stated Yolanda Brown, Petersburg City Public Schools Superintendent. "Introducing practical medical training at Vernon Johns Middle School will expose numerous students to potential careers in healthcare they might not have otherwise contemplated. This program aims to ignite their aspirations, bolster their self-assurance, and equip them with the skills necessary to envision themselves as aspiring physicians, nurses, and health care leaders. We are delighted to join forces in making this significant commitment to our students.

The launch event for the medical classroom took place on April 23, where students, faculty, and community members had the opportunity to tour the facility, engage in demonstrations and learn more about the impactful programs being offered.
