Paul Batiste: Beloved Musician and Educator of New Orleans Passes Away at 75

Paul A. Batiste, an adored musician, educator, and figure from New Orleans, bandleader Who contributed to the city’s vibrant musical heritage passed away on Friday. He was 75 years old.

A native of New Orleans, Batiste served as both the primary composer and leader of the Batiste Brothers Band, crafting most of the repertoire that shaped their distinctive style. Besides his accomplishments in music, he dedicated over three decades to educating young people, nurturing countless students through the city’s public school system as a devoted mentor.

In 1978, Batiste graduated from Southern University at New Orleans. His journey into education started with practical work at McDonogh 35 and John McDonogh High School. Over time, he took on the role of Band Director at various schools such as Hynes Elementary, McDonogh 15, Lafayette Elementary, and Sophie B. Wright. Through these experiences, he played an instrumental part in shaping the futures of notable New Orleans musical talents like Danny Barker, Henry Butler, James Black, and James Booker.

Batiste also co-wrote and produced the soundtrack for the Batiste Brothers Band’s short film A Stranger’s Story and documented his life and career in Memoirs of Paul Batiste .

He is survived by his siblings, children, grandchildren, and extended family.

The City of New Orleans issued a statement.

"Mayor LaToya Cantrell and the City of New Orleans mourn the loss of Paul A. Batiste, a proud son of New Orleans, Army veteran, educator, musician, and cultural icon.

Mr. Batiste devoted his existence to serving others—in the armed forces, in educational settings, and through performances—impacting numerous aspiring musicians and safeguarding the profound heritage of New Orleans music.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His spirit will live on through the countless students he taught, the music he shared, and the community he loved so deeply."

Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
