North Haven Resident Claims Top Statewide Award at SCSU

NORTH HAVEN, CT — Officials have revealed that a North Haven local is part of the group of four Southern Connecticut State University students who were honored with the 2025 Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award, which stands as one of the highest accolades within the Connecticut State University system.

Every year, 12 seniors are selected by the four Connecticut State Universities—four from both Southern and Central, and two from both Eastern and Western. The Barnard Award stands as one of the university’s highest honors for students, requiring a minimum GPA of 3.7 along with notable involvement in university and/or community activities.

Wajiha Ali from North Haven is pursuing a degree in business administration and has emerged as an outstanding leader within Southern’s School of Business. She has held the position of president for the Women in Leadership Academy, represented her university through various international education programs, and even hosted the ribbon-cutting event alongside Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont. According to statements made by SCSU representatives, she plans to participate in Yale University’s Early Career Development Program after completing her studies.

Wajiha Ali’s path at Southern started with a daring shift—from genetic counseling to business—driven by her enthusiasm for interpersonal relationships and teamwork. After moving to Southern, Ali swiftly established herself as a leader, bridge-builder, and supporter within the School of Business community.

Driven by her dedication to both individuals and causes, she took on roles such as becoming the president of the Women in Leadership Academy, serving as the vice president of the School of Business Dean’s Student Advisory Board, and acting as a School of Business Student Ambassador. In these capacities, she represented Southern at significant internal and external gatherings.

In 2023, she was selected to emcee the School of Business building ribbon-cutting ceremony, where she addressed over 350 guests, including Governor Ned Lamont and state and university leaders.

In the same year, she assisted in hosting a group of students from Liverpool John Moores University who were visiting with a focus on sustainability through Southern’s COIL initiative. She journeyed to Liverpool in 2024 as part of a study-abroad opportunity, during which she worked on crafting eco-friendly strategies for a nearby enterprise.

Upon graduating, she will take up a full-time position in Yale University’s Early Career Development Program.
