Nissan Ditches U.S. EV Sedan Plans, Sets Sights on New SUVs

  • Nissan According to a report, they have decided against proceeding with their plan to construct two electric sedans in the United States. Automotive News .
  • The car manufacturer admitted that the demand for sedans in the American market is decreasing and that they probably wouldn’t have been able to introduce these models without lowering their prices significantly.
  • Instead, Nissan plans to redirect its attention towards initiating production of the SUV showcased last month, which was inspired by the Xterra.

Nissan apparently ran the numbers and concluded that there isn’t much profit to be made in electric sedans at this point. According to a recent report, the company has scrapped plans to introduce two all-electric sedan models to the U.S. market. Automotive News The report relies on an internal memorandum from April 21 that was examined by the outlet.

Speaking to AN , Christian Meunier, who holds the position of chairman for Nissan in North America, stated, "The demand for sedans is declining... we must acknowledge this fact." According to Ponz Pandikuthira, the head of product planning at Nissan for North America, one challenge lies in the expenses associated with developing and manufacturing electric vehicles in the sedan segment.

"Pandikuthira stated that luxury sedans aren't our focus," he said. AN If the [electric] sedans begin at over $45,000...you've moved beyond the main segment of the sedan market.

However, for Nissan, incorporating the necessary batteries and technology into new models would make them unaffordable for their typical customers. As an alternative, the company plans to concentrate on developing a new SUV at its manufacturing facility in Mississippi.

According to the AN The report indicates that the vehicle codenamed PZ1K is identical to the Xterra-based SUV previously showcased by the company during an event held in Japan last month. Although manufacturing was initially planned for commencement in early 2027, the document reveals that this has been rescheduled to begin in January 2028.

A new Infiniti model designated as PZ1J is scheduled, however, manufacturing for this vehicle isn’t set to begin until May, which is roughly four months later than initially anticipated. Additionally, there are intentions to introduce a third model, described only as an electric vehicle without further details provided about its specific characteristics or when production will commence.

Car and Driver contacted Nissan to verify the information reported by AN. We will update this story should we receive a reply.
