New York Jets Land Florida's Edge Rusher Ja'Markis Weston as Undrafted Free Agent Post-2025 NFL Draft

The New York Jets They waited until after the 2025 NFL Draft to secure former Florida edge defender Ja'Markis Weston as an undrafted free agent on Saturday evening. However, this multi-talented graduate of the University of Florida has ultimately secured his place within the professional league. Reports indicate he was offered a contract featuring a $200,000 guaranteed salary.
Weston began his career in Gainesville as a three-star wide receiver out of Clewiston (Florida) in the 2019 recruiting cycle. He appeared in three games during his true freshman year before taking a redshirt and played in eight the following season, earning his first career tackle against Arkansas on Nov. 14.
In 2021, he played in nine matches with the Orange and Blue team, managing to score his initial touchdown during a game against Samford on November 13. Although Weston participated in 12 games overall, most of his involvement was through special teams duties, accumulating a total of 32 yards from kickoff returns.
Then, two seasons ago, the 6-foot-2.5-inch, 235-pound athlete only appeared in five games, totalling four solo tackles amid a major change in his role.
“I mentioned to him last year that he’s someone who really steps up as our dedicated player,” University of Florida outside linebackers coach Mike Peterson stated at the 2023 spring practice session. “I’ve worked with several players like this before, and they often end up making substantial earnings.” He continued, “We consider him an exemplary team player here. Initially, he might have desired more significant responsibilities; however, he has embraced his current position. These types of athletes generally enjoy extended careers.”
In 2024, Weston participated in all 13 games, mainly focusing on special teams but also seeing action on defense in three of those games. He recorded a total of nine tackles (with seven being solo), one sack, and one forced fumble, earning himself a 67.9 special teams rating from Pro Football Focus. This marked the culmination of his college journey originating from Clewiston.
"It has truly been an incredible experience. Honestly, I don’t have any complaints at all. Day after day, working alongside my brothers, having the chance to be here with them and guide them along the way—it’s not about personal gain; rather, it’s about bringing everyone together as a single unit," Weston stated.
There was no discouragement involved. Football has many aspects to understand; it’s highly strategic. You must remain focused and work hard to develop versatility. All of this will pay off eventually.
In addition to his athletic achievements, Weston was honored with a spot on the 2023 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll and successfully obtained his bachelor’s degree in Education Sciences during that autumn semester.
