National Guard Controversy Rages On in Albuquerque: Public Doubts Persist

Meliton Gonzales, who owns a business on Central Avenue, does not endorse deploying the National Guard, despite the fact that crime has had an impact on his establishment.
Gonzalez stated that drug dealers frequently engaged in gunfire with one another or instigated many altercations. There were numerous cases of mental health problems, and individuals often resorted to shooting without any particular reason.

Gonzales stated, "Our folks don't require the guard; perhaps it makes sense at the border. But out on the streets? Not necessary."
Even though Gonzales believes there is sufficient assistance at present, city officials have a different opinion.
“Let the plans emerge,” stated Albuquerque’s Chief of Police, Harold Medina. “We need to finalize our strategy. We should present our ideas and adjust them as necessary.”
Medina has indicated that this is a positive step with potential benefits. APD Chief of Staff Michael Hernandez similarly states that both the National Guard and APD have a clear understanding of their objectives aimed at enhancing public safety in Albuquerque.
"We follow a procedure where we meet nearly every day with both the Mexican guards' leaders and APD leaders during their training sessions. These meetings also cover strategy discussions," Hernandez stated.
Individuals who were interviewed by KOAT before have questioned why the National Guard isn’t equipped with weapons and believe they ought to be. The Albuquerque Police Department along with the city officials mention that their responsibilities will encompass prisoner transportation, airport safety, support with drones, and securing crime scenes.
However, Gonzales remains uneasy about bringing in the National Guard and prefers officials to explore an alternative approach aimed at enhancing safety and assisting those in need.
“We have to alter our course,” Gonzales stated. “Also, we should find a way to support them rather than discarding them.”
